“Not quite a 5 stars”

Located in the very heart of Moscow, the hotel is of acceptable business standard though I found it a bit depressing. From the upholstery to the soap bar, it is consistently below international standards while it lacks the charm of a historical Moscow hotel. It all boils down to price then - when nicer hotels in the area are available at similar rates, I would not have the faintest doubt. But if you can save USD 150/night vs. a better hotel, and that matters to you, then by all means it is a reasonable deal.

“GOOD HOTEL, GREAT LOCATION”

One of the best possible locations to stay in Moscow. Very friendly frontdesk (for Russian standards - keep that in mind!). Hotel restaurant is also very good, reasonably priced. Breakfast is excellent. Would stay there again.

Must see
The Kremlin is definetely the highlight of a Moscow trip. Do not miss the Armory AND the Diamond Fund (we could not visit it because our tour agent did not book it, what a shame!). Do not miss a drive aroud Moscow by night - quite a different view! Have NEVER seen such a well lit city at night, beautiful!
Dining
Dining out at Cafe Pushkin is quite an experience - the so called Library Room on 2nd floor requires suit and tie so be prepared for luxury. Less formal on ground floor, still very ellegant with live classical music (a violin quartet the night we went) - the price is fair, reservations may be required.

“Subway”

I'm an experience subway traveler when I go on vacations as well as in day to day life working in Manhattan, but I will say, do not bank on using the subway in Moscow if you cannot read the language. There is no English in Moscow, and no one there speaks English either. Two things I wish I would have been aware of before I went. I took a train from the Airport to the Metro. I had to ask several people where the metro was once outside of the train station. They only understood the work "metro" and he was a police officer. Once inside the subway station, the hotel was only 3 stations away, with one transfer. There was no way to know which way I was going after a couple attempts, I went outside to try to find a Taxi. Again, no one spoke English so it was a lot of pointing and showing. Ultimately, unless you are very familiar with the Language or have been there before, I would not expect to be able to take the metro to the hotel.

“Would go back again”

I will return again when next calling Moscow

Area recommendations
The location is ideal, especially for a single elderly female traveller. Everything is within walking distance - Red Square, shopping, restaurants, Metro....

“Terrific Location”

We really enjoyed our visit, and the best thing was the location within walking distance of Red Square, Bolshoy Theater, and the Kremlin. It was a matter of a few blocks of easy walking to reach all these sites and more. The included breakfast was great too, as we were set for the day. We enjoyed the quiet elegance of the Peter the 1st, and definitely would repeat our stay.

Area recommendations
I would recommend the area of the Peter the 1st, as it has many hotels, restaurants, and shopping, and it is easy to walk from the hotel to all of the major sights in downtown Moscow.

“Moscow gem!”

Lovely, extremely well managed business class hotel. Bargain rates. Rooms are fairly large by European standards. Located in the upscale Petrovka quarter. Very close (a pleasant 10-15 minute stroll) to Red Square, Kremlin, and Tverskaya Street.

Area recommendations
Red Square and the Kremlin are a must-visit. Allow a full day if possible, and save some time to relax in the pleasant Alexandrovsky park right next to the Kremlin walls. Go back after sunset to look at the same sights in floodlit glory. Kitai Gorod is an interesting neighborhood for strolling. No really big sights, but wandering around you'll stumble across many small (and very old) churches.
Getting around
The Moscow Metro is one of the best in the world, and the stations in the city center are like underground palaces, each one decorated according to a unique theme. Buy tickets at the windows; 26 rubles per ride. They can program the ticket for the number of rides you want to purchase--know how to say numbers in Russian or hold up the correct number of fingers. To enter hold the ticket over the disc; when the light turns green, walk through the gate. You don't need to do anything at the exit. Maps are color coded just like the London and Paris systems. Learn enough of the Cyrillic alphabet to be able to recognize the names of the stations!
Dining
Yolki-Palki, a Russian chain of soup and salad bar restaurants has a locations just across the street and down the block from the Peter I hotel. Also very close to this hotel is Kitezh, a very nice, traditional Russian restaurant.

“Good, but not 5-star”

Nice hotel; not quite up to 5-star, little things are missed out; like air conditioning did not work, one of the bed side lamps did not work; the free water bottle was not replaced every day. One of the biggest complaints - I stayed there when the weather was quite warm and, unfortunately, all male personnel of the hotel badly smelled. It was particularly unpleasant when waiters came by during breakfast. Otherwise - breakfast is nice; rooms service food is great and reasonably priced; and rooms are very comfortable. During the checkout, the hotel personnel took 15 minutes to properly do the bill, but then it is my experience that Russian hotels' staff are not usually very efficient and this hotel is no exception. Overall, it is a very nice hotel in a great location, I would give it 3.5 - 4 stars compared to US or European hotels though.

“Good and Bad”

The location is great. Many sightseeing sites are within walking distance. Breakfast is cool! Just that do bring your own converter. My sockets are all UK standard and they searched for the whole hotel and no converter fits! They didn't seem to care much when they couldn't help you.

“Highly Recomended”

If you are looking for a great Euopean/Non Chain hotel this is the place. Room was one of the cleanest I have ever stayed in, and I travel extensively. Breakfast Buffet was standard European fare, and service at breakfast was excellent.
