“Perfect location.”

We came specifically to bike the Mickelson Trail and do some sightseeing. The hotel was specifically for crashing and going. It was ideal for that purpose. If you are looking for a place to sit and read or lounge and have conversation..don't book your stay here. The room was outdated, everything dark (carpet, bedspread), which made me throw off the bedspread and keep my shoes on all the time. The furniture is the typical cheap, uncomfortable hotel furniture. However, the breakfast was very good. Even though the inside space to sit and eat was limited, there is a nice deck with patio furniture right out from the breakfast area. If you are wanting to spend your time and money elsewhere, this is a great place. Just don't come with great expectations.

Area recommendations
The downtown area has some fun shops.
Dining
Best of all, everyone should experience eating at the Alpine Inn. Worth the trip.
Events and shows
The 1880 Train is almost directly behind the hotel.

“Changed hotels for the second night”

We checked in late in the evening and ended up with the room closest to the lobby/stairs/breakfast preparation room. The room had both exterior and interior doors so you got noise from both sides of the room. The sheets were itchy, between that and the mosquitos that got in from the outside it was a miserable night only to be topped off by people banging down the stairs before 6am and the slamming of food preparation for the continental breakfast. The food left a lot to be desired on taste. We checked out early and found another hotel for our second night at Rushmore.

“lovely escape”

This is a lovely hotel nestled in the valley of Hill City. You can eat breakfast indoors looking out at the moutains, or sit outdoors on the deck. The property is extremely clean and well kept. All of the staff members I encountered were courteous and friendly. The only drawback for us was the cold temperature of the pool. While our kids still enjoyed swimming, I much preferred the hot tub!

“Will pay more for quieter, better location next time....”

This is my fourth stay at this hotel, and I was always able to justify the highway noise by location, cleanliness and friendliness of staff -- Not anymore. In the three years since I was last there, nothing has been done: - The highway noise has gotten louder. - There was a gap between the door and jam on all of the doors, increasing noise and allowing little bugs in - The rooms have not been renovated at all since my last stay, and have deteriated. - Staff is no longer friendly - very brusk and do not look to enjoy their jobs - Outside entrances - felt very unsafe (always had only interior before) - Room had a very damp feel - all of our clothes smelled musty after two days and all of our shoes were damp to the point of being wet. - Doors stuck & hard to open - probably due to swelling from high moisture in room - Toilet did not want to flush properly - Very little lighting in the room. - Light over sink flickered and eventually went out -- limited lighting in room otherwise, so we had to use flashlight apps on our two phones to be able to see to get ready. - Room next to laundry room and pool - constant noise and slamming doors. Can hear everything through walls & ceiling. Overall, I felt like I was staying in a very rundown Super 8 or other poor motel. We can no longer justify it. We paid well-over what it was worth...next year, we'll be staying down the road and will happily pay more money to do so, as this was not worth half of what we paid.

Area recommendations
Further into town - other hotels much better maintained, still great locations.
What to pack
Variety of clothes, as the temperature/weather varies throughout the day. Can be chilly early in the morning, evening and very chilly at night (50 - 60 in summer) Can get hot during the day (80 - 95 in summer) Quite often thunderstorms in the afternoon (usually between 2:30 - 5:00ish) so plan accordingly and watch the weather. Hiking/tennis shoes and sandals Layer clothing to add/remove clothing as the weather/temps change
Dining
Alpine Inn is a MUST! Dinner menu is a 6oz or 9 oz bacon-wrapped filet mignon, baked potato, garlic bread, and dinner salad with ranch ... that's it. I recommend the Alpine Tiramisu for dessert - a different, yummy take on the classic! Chute Roosters is a fun, family restaurant on the northern end of town...quite often has a cowboy-singer or other live music in the bar area. Very friendly staff - ask for Scott! Avoid the local "diners" service is slow, expensive and food is "eh". We have had to walk out before ordering, or get our food to go, several times over the years due to no-to-slow service.
Family-friendly activities
Candlelight Tour at Wind Cave - by far one of the coolest things I have ever done in the Black Hills Buffalo Jeep Safari @ Custer State Park -- open air jeep, off-roading, buffalo and other wildlife, entertaining guides...what more could you want? Very fun and well worth the money! The Cosmos - very fun, especially if you have kids Jewel Cave - also very fun...offers a Lantern Tour as well Reptile Gardens - be sure to catch the crocodile show and visit the giant tortoises! Bear Country USA - carve out several hours (just in case, average is 2-3 hrs) and be sure to go visit the baby bear cubs! Keystone - just walk around downtown, get some taffy, take an Old Time Picture...very fun to just check-out Trail Rides - be sure to call/check out websites carefully, as some have age requirements

“Convenient to Mount Rushmore”

This hotel was just fine. I wouldn't say it's special in anyway, but suited our needs.

“False advertising”

The hotel was ok and the location is really nice. My problem is that they call this a suite when it is actually a large hotel room with two beds. There is only a small table with two kitchen type chairs to sit in. Hardly the definition of a suite although the price is suite-like.

“Rushmore made easy”

Our stay at the Comfort Inn in Hill City was fantastic. Great breakfast and directions to The Diner in town for reasonably priced evening meals. The front desk staff was most helpful with tourist directions and advice. They moved Crazy Horse Monument higher on our priority list and put Custer State Park on it also. (Saw buffalo up close - but not personal!) They encouraged Rushmore at sunset and staying for the 9pm program (beautifully patriotic). They also recommended Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone, which should be a MUST on every Rushmore-visitor list. Well done and informative. We were there during Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis and certainly experienced the overflow; but that provides an extra colorful touch to our tale of Rushmore.

Area recommendations
I included sight seeing recommends above
Must see
Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone, South Dakota. Every president is displayed in a setting chosen by wax-creator as being appropriate. Lots of additional display items as appropriate to the times. The audio player included with price of admission gives brief but education descriptors of each scene and president. Some wives and support players also included in wax. If you are going to Mt Rushmore tack this place on your MUST SEE list. Allow 90 minutes.
