Old, but charming

Posted Aug 26, 2014
The hotel is old, it looks old, and it smells old - so that's what you should expect. The staff is great, the hotel has it's own charm. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The food at the restaurant is just like good homemade cooking and is priced right. I stayed 2 nights, the hotel was all but deserted each night. The clerk showed me to my room, showed me how to work the elevator - I decided not to risk it and took the stairs. There was loud clanging all night, on both nights. It was not the ghost, but a leaky toilet. The only thing I really didn't like was the smell of the rooms --- like mothballs and pinesol (reminded me of a nursing home smell). It took forever to get the smell out of my clothes and luggage. But, I will be back, maybe even request to stay in the haunted room. I guess it's all about expectations. Keep in mind, the tiny town, the age of the hotel, the price of the hotel and the ghosts. If you can live with that, you will enjoy your stay. I did.

The personnel were very nice and helpful during our late check in. However, I was told when I asked that the room had a refrigerator - it did not. The door to the room was very hard to close and nearly had to be slammed. The door in the bathroom was also difficult to close and did not stay closed. It was VERY noisy due to the highway next to the hotel thus very hard to sleep. I would likely seek out other accommodations when staying in Mountainair again.
