“Mumbai airport area hotel”
My overall experience at the Sahara Star was brilliant. The 1 night rate I got on Expedia was superb value for a 5 star hotel that included pickup from the international airport & drop off at the domestic airport. The hotel is next to (literally) the domestic airport (but there was absolutely no noise), but if your room rate includes pickup/dropoff from/to the airport, they will pick you up from the international airport as well. My room (and I believe all rooms) face a huge enclosed central atrium with a lot of water bodies & greenery, and had a spacious balcony with good seating arrangements allowing me to enjoy the view & excellent room service. Even though the central atrium is protected from the elements it is much warmer than your room, meaning the balcony may be a bit warm for you (this is India so enjoy the enclosed warmth, especially since you won't find a duplicate view from your luxurious hotel room anywhere else). The room was very well appointed with a lot of lighting features, extremely clean & very well laid out. The bathroom is spacious, extremely clean, features both a tub & a separate shower (the "coolness" does take away some efficiency, since there isn't a lot of counter space to keep your bath stuff like toothbrush, shaver, etc. - but that's a very minor point for a short stay). One aspect could be a killer though - the atrium is used for events, so if there is one going on during your stay the noise will probably keep you awake at night.
“An Oasis for a Weary Traveller”
I needed a place to stay in Mumbai (f/k/a Bombay) after a 15 hour flight from New York until a next day flight out of Mumbai. I wanted a hotel near the domestic airport so that I could sleep late, and one that was above average by western standards . The Sahara Star seemed to fit the bill. When I arrived by taxi around two in the morning, the staff was more than helpful, and showed me to my room which was world class by any standard. The decor was modern and very tasetfully done. Much to my surprise, I had a balcony, not to the outside, but to an indoor garden that the hotel rooms surrounded. The next morning when I got up for breakfast, I spent over an hour photographing the variety of plants in the garden, and the landscaping within the hotel. I was more than impressed with the accomodations.
“Impressive but expensive”
We decided that starting and ending our India experience in a decent hotel would soften the blow of the travelling in between and we were right. The Sahara is a very impressive hotel designed in a stadium like format with all rooms facing into the huge atrium where there are water features and many restaurants to choose from. We were also upgraded on our first stay which was a nice surprise. The restaurants all serve great food but the prices are along the same lines as a higher end Western restaurant and good wine is extremely expensive as it is imported. The one MAJOR issue we had was that we were constantly being upsold which became very annoying. To order a fish dish and then be asked if we wouldn't rather have the salmon just because it costs more is just plain rude. At one restaurant we were told that we couldn't have a glass of Aussie red and had to order a bottle 'which would make our meal more enjoyable'. So, we did and then found out the next night that this was a complete lie and he just wanted more money from us! After a while we got so sick of this constant upselling that we complained to one of the managers and to his credit he was very apologetic and gave us a free meal. However, by then it had tainted our stay and put us off returning.
