"Good if you need more room, bathroom not so great"
Shadyside Inn is a nice place to stay if you need something more like an apartment than a hotel room. This is good for extended stays or if, like me, you need a place only for a short while but want to have somewhere with a living room, separate bedroom, and little kitchenette. Nice hardwood floors, comfortable furniture and bed, free wifi and local phone calls, and it's a nice quiet place in a residential district.
That said, there are some downsides. Basically, these are old apartment buildings converted into hotel suites; and there's a certain "old apartment building" feel to it (at least in the property I stayed in -- they have several, so YMMV). The worst part of this was the bathroom: think, tiny cramped shower-over-bath with old pink ceramic tile on the wall and a plastic shower curtain; not a very luxurious experience. Similarly, the metal closet doors painted white were less than appealing, and the little kitchenette, while functional, left something to be desired.
One other note -- the front desk was in a wholly separate location from the building where my suite was located, which is fine, but it would have been good to know this BEFORE I lugged my suitcase up the steps and into the building for no purpose whatsoever.
Still, a good place to say if you need more than a standard hotel room and want to feel more like you're kind of at home, and the staff was friendly and helpful. I'd recommend it, so long as you can tolerate a lousy bathroom.
