“Perfect hotel, will return happily”

The hotel is a very interesting contrast between the old world exterior and the ultra modern lobby and rooms. Upon our arrival we were given an upgrade to a junior suite on the 3rd floor which I didn't like because it had a very strange floor plan with the bathtub practically in the living room and the windows were too high. The charming and very patient gentleman in charge of the front desk, Mr. Doro, immediately offered us another suite and took us there himself to be sure I was satisfied...I was! We got a beautiful loft with a huge window on the 8th floor that was absolutely perfect. The service in the restaurants, room service and bar was impeccable. The concierges were very attentive and helped us with our special requirements including a private tour of one of the breweries. All in all, a perfect hotel! The only down side would be that it is a bit too near the train station but it is something easily overlooked when everything else is so good.

Family-friendly activities
I highly recommend the City Segway Tour. It was defitively the highlight of our visit to Munich. It took us no time at all to master the Segway and Munich is the perfect city to do it because it has bicycle trails all over the city and there is very little traffic. This is something you cannot miss! Also, The Deutches Museum alone is worth the trip to Munich. It is amazing!

“would definitely go back”

Top notch hotel, great service, very clean. It is what you would expect from a 5 star hotel. It is located right outside of the central train station, at the same time, very quiet. Depending on who you are traveling with the hotel bathroom might not be the most private as it has a sliding slightly opened door. I would definitely stay here on my next trip to Munich.

“Great Experience”

Experience was great - after an overnight flight from the US I walked into the hotel and was in my room within 10 minutes and the staff was very helpful and room service was EXTREMELY prompt and the food was great.

“HighlyRecommend”

This hotel is a former post office, but you would never know it. It is expertly designed. The room was extremely comfortable, in particular the bathroom. There is plenty of counterspace and the shower is the best I've experienced in Europe. The room also had a nice Bose stereo with an iPod docking station. The room size was on par with a US hotel room. My only complaint is that the king size bed (really 2 singles pushed together) easily slid apart due to the fact that there are wood floors. Management needs to correct this. Other than this small issue, no complaints. Also FYI for claustophobes like myself, the elevators are very large, again comparable to those in the US. I requested a room on a lower floor to avoid the elevators (thinking they might be small) and was accomodated with a room on the second floor which provided excellent access to a very large stairway leading to the lobby. One other issue, no decent sit-down restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, but plenty of takeout places as well as Burger King and Starbucks just inside the train station which is adjacent to the hotel. Starbucks has free internet otherwise you have to pay at the hotel. Overall, would highly recommend this hotel for a stay in Munich.

Area recommendations
Would recommend taking a Grayline tour of the city. The bus leaves frequently near the hotel. Our 2.5 hour tour was only 18 euros per person. The concierge can give you additional info. Would also highly recommend day trips to Neuschwanstein castle and Salzburg. They are each two hours away by train. Grayline also offers a tour of the castle by bus.
Getting around
We did not find the Munich public transportation system to be as user-friendly as advertised, but then again did not use it extensively. We did try just about every mode available. We rode the tram, the bus and the train (U-bahn). None was particularly easy. They all have stops near the hotel. The problem for us was that there are so many of each in the immediate area (with multiple stops and multiple lines) and we did not see signs for the buses and trams clearly indicating where they were going. So it was confusing. But we gave up fairly quickly and defaulted to using cabs, which of course were very easy. I think the trams and buses would have been much easier if they had signs at the stops indicating where they make stops from that point forward. The cabs were not too expensive, generally about 10-12 euros to the center of town. And of course they are all Mercedes !!

“A big "surprise"”

This is very modernistic style hotel (not recommended for those who like classic). Room was planned so, that WC is not really isolated approprately (only glass door) - so I really did not like this kind of "privacy" at all! (taking into account that we stayed with my girlfriend in this room). I do not reccomend this hotel for romantic stay...

“Not for newlyweds”

Being forced to accept 2 single beds shoved together as a substitute for a king bed should not be part of a 5 star hotel experience. Otherwise, the hotel had a very serene, modern, otherworldly feel to it. The breakfast was very good. Their bistro restaurant was a "cold" experience --- not much life in it. The front desk personnel were knowledgeable.

Area recommendations
We went during Oktoberfest. If you're interested in absorbing the feel and excitement of the city then the area of the hauptbahnhof is just right. You can walk to Marienplatz or to the oktoberfest grounds. The hauptbahnhof itself is a great place to get a snack or even to buy chocolates. Although there are indeed drunks roving around, at least they are wearing traditional Bavarian outfits.

“Wold love to go back but it is cost prohibitive for us. A little pricey.”

Nice place but expensive and in a shady neighborhood

Area recommendations
Maybe slightly closer to the city center, this area in and around the train station has a seedy feeling and closer to city center didn't. Even just three or four blocks closer changed the feeling.

“Excellent! Comfortable and Stylish”

The hotel is elegant, politely staffed, has clean comfortable rooms with extras such as in room espresso that was great. I have stayed at this hotel before and was looking forward to staying there again. It is conveniently located next to the Hauptbahnhof (subway/train station) which can take you most anywhere around Munich and has numerous shops and eating establishments. It is a short walk to the Marienplatz. I stayed in 3 other hotels during this European trip and the Sofitel was far above the others.
