Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) west of Muotathal, while Lucerne is 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the west.
To understand why so many tourists opt for Central Switzerland as a holiday spot, make sure you and your loved ones spend a bit more time in the wider area. Why don't you make tracks to the Parish Church of St. Marzellus and Old Town Hall Museum of Local History in and around Gersau, 11 miles (18 kilometers) distance away. If you feel like seeing more of Central Switzerland, travel to Glarus Sued to visit the Braunwald Ski Resort and Elm Ski Resort. Glarus Sued is 17 miles (27 kilometers) away.
Around 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the west of Muotathal is Lucerne, an important regional center which is home to Mount Pilatus, Bourbaki Panorama and Hofkirche. If you still have time left, it's worth investigating Loewenplatz, Chapel Bridge and Saint Peters Church before you return to Muotathal.
If you want to stay indoors, you can't do better than Central Switzerland's history museums, art museums and art galleries. These are great spots to learn a little about the local lore and culture and pick up a souvenir or two. To discover the heart and soul of Muotathal, be sure to make a stop at the region's cathedrals.
The Muotathal region is perfect to get out and partake in winter sports. When temperatures drop, grab your mittens and scarf and spend the day snow shoeing or skiing.
When it's time to leave, say a fond Au revoir / À bientôt (farewell) to the people you've enjoyed getting to know and the landscapes you've seen.
