Housed in a stunning neoclassical building, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico has one of the most extensive collections of Puerto Rican art in the world. As one of the biggest museums in the Caribbean, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico attracts visitors from all over the globe. It’s a must-see for anybody with an interest in art or the cultural history of Puerto Rico.

Either meander through the exhibits on your own or join a guided tour to get a deeper understanding of what you’re seeing. Tours are available in both English and Spanish and are given by trained art historian. Walk through the museum’s permanent collections to discover historical works of art from across Puerto Rico. The wide variety of exhibits span from the 16th century to today.

The top floor offers a room dedicated to the influence of Francisco Oller y Cestero, one of the most famous artists from the region. As one of the first artists to paint work that went beyond religious iconography, he expanded the horizons of the Puerto Rican art world and helped create the vibrant work of modern painters.

Wander the museum’s sprawling gardens after you’ve explored its interior, to discover a vast collection of native flora. The gardens are a beautiful place to enjoy a picnic or simply relax in the sun. 

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is located in central San Juan and can be easily reached on foot from many downtown hotels. If you’re driving, parking is available for a small fee, and public bus is another option (routes A5 or B21). The museum is closed Mondays, and there’s a small admission fee.
