Area:
Pawleys Island, South Carolina, United States of America: Pawleys Island has served as a coastal getaway since the 1700s. The town has opted to preserve its historic character by enacting strict zoning laws, which means that those seeking for high-rise digs will have to look on the mainland. At its narrowest points, the island is no wider than a typical house. Its historic district includes a dozen pre-Civil War homes.
