It was the country?s first capital after Independence. A city that captivates every visitor with its wealth of interesting sights, local culture and social life, Nafplion is a delight to experience. Built on ancient earth, Nafplion is nearby the archaeological sites of Mycenae, Tyrins, Epidavros; treasured ruins that hold the secrets of the great civilizations of antiquity. Yet, the city, itself, has a history of its own. Under Venetian influence in medieval times, the city?s narrow streets are adorned with elegant, period homes, picturesque balconies and its harbor is dominated by imposing fortresses. Nafplion was at the centre of the dramatic events of the 19th century that shaped the New Greek State. The city center, mainly, Constitution Square, is a tribute to this era with many monumental buildings including the first Greek Parliament building. Shining in the harbor are three majestic fortresses, the vast Palamidi Fortress, the Akronaplia Fortress and the Bourtzi Castle, which can only be reached by boat. For the energetic visitor, climbing the 999 steps leading to the Palamidi Fortress, has its reward: an awesome view of the environs and sea below.. However, you can also drive to the top to enjoy the setting in all its splendor. The cosmopolitan flair of the city comes alive at sunset at Aktis Miaouli along the harbor where busy cafes and bars welcome you to a taste of Greek nightlife. Whether you begin or end your day at Nafplion, the Ilion Hotel, housed in a traditional building with a history that dates back 300 years, adds its own magic to the fascinating city of Nafplion.
