Pros: Ocean front suite, beach, friendly staff
Cons: Dinner buffet, and shower ammentities
Location: We left the resort 3 times to go out for dinner. Ricks cafe and Seven mile Beach
When we arrived the reception desk informed us that they had upgraded our room from ocean front to ocean front suite. Fabulous room. The room was clean and comfortable. The staff at the hotel were all very helpful and friendly. We one night had our shower handle break and maintenance was in the room within an hour to replace the shower head. The front desk was always very accommodating when asked anything. The beach was great. The water pretty shallow even at the buoys. Snorkeling was decent around the grassy areas and rock. Puffer fish and sting rays were frequently seen. The specialty restaurant were very good. The bars were very efficient and the drinks were not watered down like most all inclusive. The area that really needs improved at this resort is the dinner buffet. Staffing levels were not adequate to maintain clean tables. The staff that were there were literally running from table to table to keep up. The other problem is that the food selection at the buffets was of poor quality. Over cooked and dried out. My other personal problem was that the ammentites in the bathroom. The shower gel / shampoo combo left my hair feeling like straw. So take your own shampoo, cream rinse, shower soap and lotion.

Cons: Dining options. For a large resort and a week stay, we got reservations to 1 restaurant which was no more than 12 tables (others were even smaller)!
Overall, disappointing. The resort itself was probably very nice when it was new, but has not been well maintained or updated. Pools were okay, nothing special. Resort property is large and there is a lot of beach front. However, locals walked up and down the beach ALL day long trying to sell you things, including drugs. Security very loose. Food options VERY limited and after a week of staying we were sick of it. There are three restaurants you can eat at in addition to the large buffet dining hall (cafeteria), but they require reservations and space is EXTREMELY limited and hard to get a reservation. The online description makes it sound like there is a larger selection of restaurants to eat at, but other than the three reservation-only restaurants (dinner only) there was one place to eat breakfast and one place to eat lunch and food was far from impressive if you are used to healthy home cooking. They offer watersports at a cost and be careful of the locals that walk the beach and ask you if you are interested in glass water boating, etc. They are NOT part of the resort and the resort does not warn you. Our room's airconditioning was leaking and we had to put towels down to absorb the water and avoid slipping. Also had to kill a cockroach in our room. I have never stayed at a RIU before, but after this stay I would not return to Jamaica or a RIU.

made the best of our vacation. most employees are very friendly and accommodating while some are not. enjoyed the pool and beach. didn't care for the locals walking the beach trying to sell you marijuana and other things. the food situation was the worst. you can only eat at one place. reservations at some restaurants fill up too fast and it takes days in advanced to get them. you have to be standing in line by 8am to hope to get a reservation.where you eat its buffet style food so it nice to have a variety but my family was not fond of the food. especially eating the same thing for the whole week. I thought there might have been more snacks throughout the day but there wasn't anything. we had young kids on vacation with us and there wasn't much to do besides hang on the beach or the pool. unless you want to travel outside the resort.

Pros: The buffet was every large and had a wide variety of food. The hotel was fully booked, but it never felt crowded. The rooms were outdated but clean and well air conditioned. The liquor is not as watered down as I expected. The room had a full bar and there are several bars located on the resort. We heavily tipped the beach bar manager, Cleon, and received excellent service our whole trip. The beach is very long, so matter what building your are in, the beach is a few feet away. The beach was clean. The hotel is in a bay, so there are no waves and the water is calm. Cons: the hotel requires a two day advance reservation for the restaurants and they won't allowed you to reserve until you are present. We arrived too late the first day to reserve a table, and we lucky to get two nights at the restaurants. The bathrooms are sparse in amenities. They have a shower cap and a liquid soap/shampoo combo in the shower.

Pros: Since we visited 2 resorts: Riu in Negril had a more impressive general buffet then Montego Bay. Staff was generally nice at both locations.
Cons: The "system error" that started off our trip and ultimately cost us 3 extra trips between 2 resorts and also made making dinner reservations difficult
Location: Negril beach was much nicer than Montego Bay. Able to walk and see more things in Negril, Montego Bay we felt boxed in. Lobster shack on beach:AMAZING
When we arrived at the resort we were told "you've been upgraded to Tropical down the beach." When we asked if our whole group would be going they said yes. But within a couple minutes, we were told that was a mistake and we would be "put up" at the Tropical in Montego Bay rather than Negril which we had chosen. We of course became upset and refused the "compensation" and a sales rep came to tell us we had no choice, they had no rooms. We were offered 3 free nights vouchers to be used at another stay, no part of this trip could be refunded. We sat for 2 hours trying for a more agreeable compensation and also for the rest of our group to join us. In the end, we were NOT upgraded in anyway but put back in a taxi for a return trip of 1.5hr to Montego Bay for 2 nights followed by ANOTHER 1.5hr in a taxi to complete our trip at our chosen resort in Negril. So far we have not seen the 3 nights free voucher we were offered. Management took our email address to send them to us. Extremely disappointed in management! We were told this was a management mistake/decision and had nothing to do with Expedia.

Cons: Our room was musty smelling - I think from the air conditioner. The coffee was weak - I was really expecting great coffee in Jamaica
Location: Free Shuttle to Margaretaville - walk 7 mile beach. YS Falls was beautiful.
The resort was great. Excellent buffet with tonnes of variety. Beautiful pathways with perfect lighting for an evening walk. The beach was amazing - we rarely left. Lots of trees to steal away from the sun, much better then a beach lined with umbrellas. There was a Beach bar with awesome blender drinks, anything you want. Bring an insulated drink mug and lots of $1 to tip your bartender, they are great and could use a few more trees around them. They also had a chicken jerk shack for lunch on the beach... literally thought of everything. Bring a water floaty and snorkel because the fish and reefs in the bay are a must. The best part was the amazing people - staff. Such friendly people always smiling... I would come back for the people. We almost missed seeing Paul the signing bartender at the lobby lounge - he was so good. Stop by after dinner to start your romantic evening. The rooms were very nice but ours was a bit musty and I had heard they were due for a renovation.

I stayed at the riu in Dec of 14. The all inclusive was nice but lacking a full bar. The buffet food was good but I would recommend making reservations for the a tall restraunts. Location is the eastern most resort there. Only negative on the resort was all the bees flying around the bars

Lots of drinks, great food, and happy atmosphere. The employees are very friendly! The only two negative comments I have are the night life entertainment could use a bit of work, and the vendors walking around the beach get very annoying very quick trying to constantly sell you things. Resorts should keep such people out. Otherwise the resort is great and in a great location. Very beautiful!
