Setting ExpectationsPosted Aug 4, 2011 on Hotels.com
We read the reviews and had very low expectations other than a clean bed, and that is what we got. I believe this property is a diamond in the making and with some upgrades it can live up to its name "A Resort". The location is probably a hinderance in getting people's attention as a viable option unless the prospect is a boater. We met with the management team and made a few suggestions and if they implement that they will probably will generate traffic that will provide them the revenue to make the necessary changes to really make this property a hot spot near New Bern. They are close to golf courses and downtown New Bern tourism which gives some sightseers an opportunity to have a great experience. They need to perhaps partner with these entities which can help create packages which will attract more travelers. The only other point I would like to make is they should provide a "users guide" in the room, "how do you inform the staff that you would like for your room to be cleaned" and perhaps "another set of keys" so that if you have more than one person that each person has their own set of keys. We did not take advantage of the onsite facilities like the indoor or outdoor pools but from afar they looked clean and well maintained. The recreation facility provided entertainment opportunities especially if inclement weather arises. We had breakfast on Sunday and the quality of food was good, portion was more than adequate, staff interaction was appropriate and the prices were reasonable. I wish them well and we will be back.

Hotel in terrible condition- close to nothingPosted Jul 25, 2011 on Hotels.com
Old hotel in less than good condition about 10 miles from New Bern NC. We stayed for two days; the room was not cleaned while we were there. Very small shower and filthy carpet. Had to ask for fresh towels. Only way to contact a hotel employee is through leaving a message at the bar. Description included pool and work out facility, neither was available. No amenities, not even a blow dryer in room. Continental breakfast consisted of one previously frozen blueberry muffin and a can of tomato juice. Worst hotel experience we have ever had.

Nice overnight stay by the waterPosted Jun 21, 2011 on Hotels.com
I think the previous reviews were unfair to some degree. The hotel certainly needs some updating, but it does have a charm to it. It is fun to stay next to the docks, and you are staying next to the restaurant, which was very good. They had a band playing on the deck on a Saturday night, and it was fun. This is a very authentic experience, not a brand new cookie cutter upscale type of hotel. The pool and mini golf was a nice surprise as well. A very nice experience, friendly staff as well.

The Hurricane Resort-Restaurant it is NOT!!Posted May 31, 2011 on Hotels.com
Exceptional location if you are visiting friends with a sailboat or yacht and spend most of your time on the water - as we did. Room had dirty coffee cups, no way to call room service, very basic pre-packaged rolls/danish's and small canned fruit juices for breakfast (except Sunday when the restaurant was open). Light comes into the room from outside. The room was not compleely set up before our arrival and checkin was a "search and find" affair. Air Conditioner was not on when we entered the room and the room was both humid and musty. No coffee in the room. Bedside lamps and phones were basically non existant. The shower stall does not have any type of non-skid - very slipery and very easy to fall down in. Beware when taking a shower. Hot water was excellent. Dirty ring around the toilet. Staff was non-existant and had to be found for check-in. Once found the staff was friendly and did attempt to make our stay enjoyable. Overall The Hurricane Resort should be priced as mid range off season all year with limited ammenities during all seasons. Simply a slightly below average hotel that is very convientent when visiting Fairfield Harbor. The bed was very comfortable.

Needs UpdatingPosted May 10, 2011
The hotel is old and needs significant updating and repairs. We had to change rooms because the first room wasn't as clean as it should have been and the manager couldn't find the room key. In the 2nd room, we had to request someone come and clean the balcony furniture, there were problems with the door lock, and the refridgerator hadn't been cleaned out from the previous guests. The gentleman who came to fix the lock had been drinking heavily. The other staff members were very friendly and attentive

We regret this guests stay was not up to our usually high standards. Due to the recent tornadoes striking the region we were 100 % occupied the night before and had some very late checkouts. Housekeeping had yet not cleaned the room reserved so we offered guest a room upgrade no additional charge; which they accepted. Shortly after settling in, they came down for dinner and stated the lock did not work. I personally checked the lock and advised them they have to turn the locking mechanism; the doors do not lock automatically. We did need to clean the balcony furniture as a result of the weather. We only have 6 rooms and almost 100% occupancy and our staff takes pride serving our guests.

Hurricane Hotel Fairfield Harbor New Bern, NCPosted Apr 25, 2011 on Hotels.com
Loved the location on the marina...very friendly people,but....this is not really a hotel, more like a boarding house attached to a bar/rest. No front desk, no staff, no lobby, no entrance (unless you count the bar entrance)....noisy at night with people, not guests, wandering about the halls at all hours looking to have a smoke.....the placed smelled of cigarette smoke and there were spent butts all over the place. never got any maid or linen service...same sheets and towels for 2 days.....no one at the non-existent front desk to complain to. the advertised included continental breakfast only happens on Sunday......we were not informed of that until after we arrived.....the coffee maker in the room was not cleaned from the last time it was used....towels were stained....no wonder our reservation was pre paid...if we had not already paid for the 2 night stay, it would have been only a 1 night stay....never again will I prepay for a multiple night stay after this horror show,,,,

Less of a hotel more a guest housePosted Oct 28, 2010
The rooms were very comfortable and the restaurant which was part of it was great We ate there every night. Not gourmet but well cooked and imaginative menu. The owners were sometimes rushing around and gave the impression that things were too much for them but overall the experience was a pleasant one. Don't expect 5* quality but the location on the marina and access to the surrounding area, coupled with good food an a comfortable room was more than adequate for our weekend. Staff were exremely friendly and we struck up a good rapport with them.

Loved it!Posted Oct 18, 2010
My sister and I recently spent 3 days of our vacation here. The staff were friendly and helpful; we were treated like family for our stay. Such a beautiful and relaxing location. We ate there every night; the food was to die for!!!! We enjoyed sitting out on the deck at sunset. Staying in the round room was a unique experience. We would definitely go back!

Pleasantly SurprisedPosted Sep 9, 2010
From the moment my husband and I arrived we were treated like royalty. Jan showed us to our room and we could not believe how beautiful it was. We have never stayed in such a large room and it also had a balcony facing the Marina. It was absolutely gorgeous. We settled in and had dinner at the restaurant which is on the premises. The service was great and the food was even better. Chef Bruce came out personally to make sure everything was okay. On the way back from Florida we stayed two more nights. This time it was the weekend and not only did we enjoy eating at the Hurricane but had fun dancing on the deck. Who knew, they even had entertainment! We really can't wait to get back
