Wonderful stay at excellently located hotel

Posted Dec 31, 2013
Pros: Wonderful location, friendly staff, very clean rooms.
Cons: Larger towels, ice creams by the pool area (drinks were served though).
Location: Highly recommend the Noumea Aquarium, less than 5 min walk from the Hotel Le Surf. Plus a great gourmet ice cream café on the way, next to the Quick.
We had a wonderful stay at the Hotel Le Surf over Christmas 2013. The (lagoon view) room was exceptionally clean and maintained so. The bathroom was clean and odour-free. The staff were very friendly and helpful and appeared to speak excellent English, though I mainly spoke French with them. They made several taxi and "navette" (airport minibus) bookings for us perfectly. We found breakfast very satisfactory, it's not what you would get in a Paris hotel, but for Noumea it was a good French Continental spread with nice fresh tropical fruit. The hotel and its decor are a little "faded" but we found that this added to the hotel's charm. The historic photos and carvings all around are actually quite interesting. They had also done a beautiful job with Christmas decorations. Also the bedrooms had possibly been renovated because the decor there seemed very fresh and contemporary. I chose the Hotel Le Surf because it was cheap and appeared to have an excellent location (walking distance from the Baie de Citrons, but also facing the main southern beach and walkable to the Hilton/tourist shop complex). This turned out to be a really great choice.

where not to stay

Posted Sep 13, 2012
Pros: the ocean view
Cons: not tourist friendly and no english TV channels
Location: central during the day but buses ceased around 19.00hrs
totally a disaster breakfast bread was not fresh no bacon and eggs available although on the menu except on buffet weekend. staff could not keep the 3 coffee machines filled although there was few guests. birds flying around the breakfast area and landing on table. staff had no idea how to keep things filled only that we had prepaid would have left this hotel the only good thing was the view from our room and the entry reception area was comfortable and reception staff were friendly but had no idea of facilities available for tourists..internet connection was down in reception area when we queried after a few days staff told us that internet no longer avalable

A bit run down but comfortable

Posted Aug 30, 2012
The hotel is a bit of a mixed bag. It looks like it was once a top hotel but is now somewhat run down and needs a complete refurbish. The staff are friendly, helpful and relaxed. I had to search for toilet paper one night and twice had to ask for sugar and coffee when they had not restocked these items. Ate at their restaurant by the pool once and the food was great. If these glitches won't spoil your holiday then you can be in a comfortable room and a great location without paying too much.

OK hotel if you happen to get a bargain rate

Good location, good rate. A musty smell in the room, but otherwise clean.

Faded elegance

Posted Jul 29, 2012
Pros: The staff are really lovely and the hotel has history which is missing in much of Noumea.
Cons: The bathroom
Location: Perfect between two gorgeous beaches.
The location, the staff and the ambience are wonderful. The bathrooms need some work.

I would recomend this hotel on price only !! Breakfast was poor and the hotel is very run down.

The above says it all !! however typical of all Noumea businesses there is a general reluctance to cater for non French speeking guests.
