A charming hotel with very polite and helpful staff, easily accessible from Southamption and set in the New Forest.
Food in the restaurant was very good.
Downsides - room was a little on the pokey side, and given the age of the building it wasn't surprising that the floorboards were a little creaky and the walls a little thin. Room service menu only covered snacks rather than meals, but these were very minor criticisms

Family room and swimming pool was ideal for young children. Expectations were low given previous reviews but was surprisingly nice hotel in good location. Breakfast was a little haphazard with vacant staff leaving empty plates on the small table but trying to clear away food that we were still eating! Quality of breakfast was very mediocre also. Other than that a good stay.

Pleasant hotel, not sure if present owners are trying to "bring up" but let down by one or two little things....such as the previous occupants tea being left in the teapot!!
Cant praise staff enough however, always friendly, polite and professional....very welcoming and helpful at all times.
We had a standard room due to availability, would have liked a superior one and to see what difference that would have made, if any.
We got the feeling that they were trying to make the hotel very superior, with modern elements of décor etc. whilst perhaps sacrificing some of the original features and past grandeur.....but overall we enjoyed our stay.

"Nice Country Manor House hotel in the New Forest."
This hotel was recommended to me by my sister who has stayed there a couple of times. Our impression is that the hotel is pretty good, but there is a need to look at the restaurant staffing and service particularly for dinner.
Our room 2 bedded (One king size and one separate bed as we had our 7 year old Grandson with us) was a good size, well-equipped and clean. Some of the carpet in the hallway was torn - not a good impression. We overlooked the large nice outside swimming-pool which grandson enjoyed despite it being cold (if he said so it must have been).
Generally the service was good, one of the receptionists when asked if she recalled my Sister's visit was a bit curt and surely "we see a lot of people checking in and out, I couldn't possibly remember.
For Dinner we invited our widowed Brother-in-Law and his Partner from Poole. The service left a lot to be desired. Despite being asked for an early table and quick service as our 7 year-old is not used to staying up beyond 8 p.m. The main course took over an hour - and even then a problem with the service meant that my Wife's main-course had to be re-cooked - so that main courses finally were all served by 20:50 hrs and we had to take our Grandson to bed shortly afterwards as he was past his "sell-by date"! There was no offer of compensation either then or at checkout despite apologies being offered on the evening and by the Manager, Paul who checked us out. I think this should have been offered ex gratia.

We chose the hotel bedroom option and the room was like a chalet outdoors, it was very pleasant and what we needed. Twin bed with TV and nice sized bathroom.
We decided to go to the steak house for lunch unfortunately, they had no baguettes for lunch. The restaurant itself needs improvement.

The New Forest covers 144 square miles of unspoiled heath and woodland where ponies, donkeys, deer and cattle still roam freely. It is best explored by bike or on foot. Beaulieu is home to the National Motor Museum and a stately home of monastic origins. Picture-postcard villages include Burley, Brockenhurst and maritime Buckler's Hard. The area's attractive little 'capital' Lyndhurst is home to the New Forest Museum and Visitor Centre.
