“Avenue Plaza hotel”

This hotel was a little off the beat and path, but the quality was wonderful. The staff was extremely helpful and nice. The local trolly is right outside of the hotel and cost $3.00 for an all day pass. It will drop you off on Canal street right by Bourban street. The Trolly also runs 24 hour a day.

“Questionable Neighborhood, Obnoxious Time-Share Sales People”

I should have known better than to think the concierge was just engaging us in conversation: even though we paid full price for two nights stay at this hotel, they hounded us continuously about attending a timeshare presentation that lasts 120 minutes. We spent the weekend dodging him. It was ridiculous. The "suite" was fine. The bed was hard as a rock and the walls were thin, we could hear everything going on outside and it was nearly impossible to sleep. Everything was clean. There was no bedding for the pullout sofa. The pool is so small it's a joke - smaller than most private residences pools. The timeshare hard sell salespeople were annoying. Their gifts aren't even worth bothering with and for heavens sake - it's not like finding a dumpy hotel is so hard to do! Why would anyone want to buy into this chain?? We paid full price for two nights but checked out after one. We felt like we were constantly running from sales people. The hotel is on the streetcar line and feels fairly safe but it's just a few blocks from the ghetto. Would not stay here again.

Area recommendations
French Quarter only. They aren't kidding when they warn visitors about staying in the Quarter only. Venturing out a few blocks feels very unsafe and this city is full of scavengers and con artists.

“Close to convention center”

I needed to stay at a hotel close to the convention center. All the "official" hotels for the convention were both expensive and booked. Found this one on Expedia. It is close - about a 5 min cab ride. Nice neighborhood on the trolly route. Found a few good restaurants. I liked the fondue place across the street. The hotel was clean but not fancy. The rooms are large. I got a small suite with a kitchen - nice to be able to cook a few simple meals instead of eating out when away. Front desk staff helpful. I didn't use the concierge service to book any tours, but it looked like several guests were finding it helpful.

“All you could ask for”

Hotel is very nice. Loved the mini kitchen. includes: sink stove, fridge, microwave, dishes and blender. Did not like shower only and no tub. No smoking, although smoking is allowed on the roof and in the back courtyard. Coffee most of the day in building in courtyard. Staff is wonderful although check in is slow. However, you're in the 'Big Easy' and that's the way it's done almost everywhere. Visitors center across the street for maps & info. Streetcar stop right outside hotel door. We didn't bring a car and didn't need it, buses or trolleys will take you anywhere. If you have a car, don't take it to the French Quarter. Congested traffic, high parking fees if you can find parking, and you can walk to anything. There is a market called Zara's two blocks away to do shopping and they have a cookout on Saturdays we recommend. Another market on the corner of block hotel is on, sells the best gumbo (carry-out), recommended by locals and they were right. No maid service as this is a time share and also a hotel. However, if you ask at the desk you can get fresh towels or whatever. Make sure to take the tour offered for the Ashley House behind the hotel. It only takes about 1/2 hour, but is free and a chance to see one of the garden district homes from the inside. Ask at the front desk about the tour. Also, shuttle service to airport available if you ask ahead of time.

Area recommendations
If you want to party, French Quarter. But be ready for noise well into the night. We like the Garden District-no longer than 1/2 hour to catch trolley and be back in the hotel from the French Quarter. If you want good music, go to Frenchmens Street. I would also recommend staying in the Warehouse district, right in the middle of the Quarter and Garden. For eating, get out of Quarter and streetcar streets. Much cheaper and better quality. If your eating in only tourist spots, you will only meet tourists. We found good food on Magazine street as well interesting shops. Also, don't miss the Katrina exhibit at the Presbytre, only a few bucks and worth the time. Walking and trolleys are the best way to see NO, you get to meet the people of the city and that was the best part of our visit. We downloaded walking tours of garden district and the french quarter from Frommes, and saved tour guide fees. Also, many stores sell books with walking tours in them. You will be approached by panhandlers. We told them, sorry no cash, only credit cards and had no problem. Also, when using trolleys, move to the back (you may have to weave through folks that won't go to back) if there are no seats and have your pass ready when you board. Your on vacation, but locals use these to get to work. Get passes at Walgreen's on the corner. Passes are dated, so use yours up before buying another. If you have small children, don't take on Ghost Tour,, VERY graphic. Have fun

“Not the best Hotel”

At checkin the staff member was unfriendly. The first room offered was not acceptable the kitchen sink rusty. We complained and was given another room. The rooms are not serviced and lacked comfort and the lifts were often not working. for the price I expected the room to be cleaned the 6 days we were there. . This hotel compared poorly to the Homewood Suites in Nashville where we had stayed the week before On a positive note it is in the Garden district on a trolly route very convenient. For great food try the Cheesecake Bistro just up the road

“Great Hotel in Garden District”

First time staying in the Garden District of New Orleans and it was very enjoyable. Location was just a hop, skip and a jump via the St. Charles Street Car to the French Quarter or to the Riverbend area. Nice and quiet! The courtyard of the hotel was very relaxing. Also enjoyed the free coffee and iced tea in the afternoon.

Area recommendations
Recommend the Garden District if you want to relax and enjoy the scenery.

“Southern Hospitality at its Best!”

We enjoyed our stay at The Avenue Plaza very much. We arrived in town on Wednesday and check in was very easy and every single employee was very friendly. I loved walking in at night with somebody greeting me asking how my evening was....very consistent. Excellent customer service! We were fortunate to get a newly renovated room on the 12th floor. The room was FABULOUS! Super comfy bed, amazing shower and great common room area complete with brand new kitchen appliances, counter tops and cabinets. I was very impressed considering I had no idea they had started renovations and was thinking we were going to get a room like in the photos. It was a great home away from home. The rooftop sundeck offered amazing views of the city and would've been a perfect place to enjoy a morning cup of coffee (if it's not too hot like it was when we were there). I really don't have any complaints about the hotel at all, except there was a closet in our room that was locked. I don't know if there was a water heater or what in there, but randomly during the night the door would start vibrating causing a tedious sound, but it wasn't too bad. If you're a heavy sleeper, you may not even notice it at night. I was very pleased with our experience and would definitely stay here again as well as recommend to anybody traveling down to NOLA. The location is great, you're not in the hustle and bustle of downtown but your just a short cab ride away.

Area recommendations
Definitely check out Bourbon Street if you've never been before. It's a touristy area, with wonderful drinks and overall a great time! We had a cab driver who, on his own time and without additional charge, took us around to Frenchmen Street (New Orleans best kept secret) where you'll find all the great music of NOLA. Since Bourbon became really touristy, the locals hang out here. Great tip! There are so many amazing places to walk around in the French Quarter and Jackson Square. We had a BLAST! Be sure to get as much walking in as you can because the food is SOOO good down there, you're bound to gain a few lbs!
Getting around
Most of the cab drivers we encountered were really friendly and let us in on some of New Orleans best kept secrets! In Jackson Square, take a tour around the city in a mule drawn carriage...the driver's usually ask what you'd like to see and cater the tour around the guests. Make sure you have them show you Brad and Angie's place ;-)
What to pack
Anytime during the summer and fall, less is more, trust me!!! Dresses keep you cool, skirts, light pants. It is HUMID and HOT all at the same time! Comfortable walking shoes. You'll be walking a lot down there and you want to be comfy.
Must see
Bourbon Street Frenchmen Street French Quarter Jackson Square Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World Take a street car ride up and down St. Charles Street
Shopping
Great little shops within the Quarter as well as the street vendors and their art outside of Jackson Square.
Dining
Mother's - AMAZING!!! Everybody down there will tell you that!! Port-of-Call Cafe DuMonde Muriel's Coops
Family-friendly activities
Blaine Kern's MArdi Gras world...the place where all the magic happens. You can try on costumes and tour the warehouse with all the floats. People of all ages would really enjoy :-)
Nightlife
Bourbon Street for sure!!
