We arrived to a property that hadn't been cleaned. Though the owner of the property tried to make it right by sending people over to at least change the beds and clean the bathrooms, this ended up being the least of our problems. Heat didn't work in half of the house where 3 of the bedrooms and the majority of the bathrooms were when temperatures dipped below 30 at night. When we plugged in space heaters, it tripped the power to that half of the house. When the owner sent someone to 'fix the heat' all the person did was change the thermostat on the side of the house that heat was working, but did nothing to fix the heat on the side of the house that we had none. When we mentioned to the owner of the property we appreciate what he had tried to do, but we would be trying to get some money back, he responded saying that essentially because the property was 'cheap' for 11 people to stay, that we wouldn't be getting money back. I don't care how 'cheap' it is to stay somewhere, heat and power is something essential to staying even in a motel. On top of that, the property was quite literally falling apart. The pool and hot tub looked like it hadn't been maintained in years. Part of the roof looked like it was bowing. We flushed one of the toilets and water started spraying out from the back of it. We went to close a sliding door to one of the rooms and it just came out of the tracks. There were fire alarms that weren't attached, they were just sitting on the counter.

Do not stay there!
My wife and I had an awful time- so bad that we left after the first night even though we had a reservation for 4 nights. The owner was overwhelmed when we got there and it took some time for us to get settled in our 3rd floor room. He said he would retake care of a burned out bulb on the night table lamp but never did. The sink in the bathroom had no hot water unless you turned the valve underneath. The towels were not clean. The bed was terrible- it made noise every time you moved and the mattress was awful. The breakfast was mediocre at best. When we called to let them know about the problems in the room we did not get any response until 11am the next day by which time we diecided to move to a decent hotel. While the history of the place and the art was interesting, I would never stay there again because of the condition of the place and the lack of concern from the owner/operator. I have never written a bad review of anywhere else (I travel a lot all over the world) but in this case I really felt compelled to do so.

The property appears to have been abandoned for some time. It is in major disrepair inside and out. On approach to the property you first realize the advertised drive way is unusable with out a large 4x4 vehicle. Front door access key pad is broken. Entering the house the smell of mold is overwhelming. Cob webs dust hornet/wasp nest inside the house we found one in sheet on the bed. BED BUGS were found in two of the four bed rooms dead bugs of various types found throughout. Black Mold in one of the furnace rooms completely covering the walls. If the front yard and interior of the home were not bad enough. The real reason our family booked this property was because of the swimming pool and cool water jacuzzi. Both were filthy and inoperable. No electricity to rum pumps in pool and it obviously had not been used in a very long time. We called owner of the property, he had us call the property manager to come clean up and change bedding they came in with a single sheet of paper towel wiped of 1 or 2 surfaces and left promising to come back with pool guy. Owner showed up tried to get electricity working for pool area didnt help and left us to figure it out. Some of our party was fortunate to afford different accommodations at their own expense last minute, the others of us including a pregnant woman and a 2 year old slept on top of covers and breathed moldy air for our two night stay. At the time of composing this review everyone that stayed is sick. Worst experience ever

Amber, thank you for letting us know about your recent stay at the Beauty on the Bayou. To be quite hones, I am confused by this review because when I met with you, there was not mention of some of the things you have written about. You made a reservation for 8 guests and there were 10 in the house when I was there fixing the electrical problem. I gave you the opportunity to leave, but your said no you were going to stay. When we inspected the property after your departure, we found you and your guests had smoked in the house and there was a fowl odor of smoke throughout the house.

I would like to start by saying Danielle was amazing! She was so friendly and accommodating. She was definitely the best part of this stay. The house is old and I understand that, but it was in a bit of disrepair. The listing advertises cooked to order breakfast daily and housekeeping. There was no housekeeping. During our 4 night stay, we were served 2 continental breakfasts, 1 cooked to order breakfast and Saturday there was no breakfast at all. The food that was provided was very good and the staff was super friendly and helpful. The rooms are air conditioned, but the rest of the house is not. The common areas were very warm and the dining room was quite hot during breakfast. There is no after hours number to call for when things go wrong. Another guest checked in after 5 pm and the AC in their room was not working. The couple in the room next to us, had to pry their bathroom door open with a butter knife after the handle fell off. You can walk to the French Quarter. It appears to be a reasonably safe neighborhood. After fees we paid about $300 per night. Not the best value for sure.
Response from Kathy on May 29, 2023
Ms. Vann, we spoke on the porch before you left the property and I explained the chef did not show up and I was not notified in time to get to the house to prepare the continental breakfast. I live in the suburbs of New Orleans and it would have been over an hour before I could have gotten to the house. You said you understood what had happened during your stay. I apologized. The couple you talked about in this review was moved quickly and efficiently to another upgraded and room and they were happy..

The one meal we serve, which is included in your rate, is the breakfast which has received numerous accolades from out other guests. Again we wish you had told us about this while you were here. The Degas House and our employees pride ourselves on good service and a great breakfast. Centrally located property in midtown on Esplanade. I wanted to have easy access to the French Quarter south of the hotel on Esplanade. I walked from Frenchmen to the hotel in 20-25 minutes and it’s about 10 minutes by car depending on traffic. The GOOD - The buildings aesthetically beautiful, antique furniture, authentic NOLA character with oak trees and Degas sculpture at the front. The master chefs of the kitchen Ms Sharon Ms Alma and Ms D are a formidable team. Best food I eat my entire trip and they took care of me like family. I stayed in the Josephine which had a window looking out to the neighbour’s balcony. The sheets were soft, bed comfortable and I slept well. The BAD- Reception desk has limited hours. I arrived late at night I had to retrieve my key from a drop box. Which worked well but it was not a warm welcome for a stranger in a new city. I never met the manager at all. I checked out the way I arrived. It’s an old historic building so the walls are thin and noise travels easily. There is of course no elevator and a lot of stairs. Lugging my suitcase to my room was no easy feat. The UGLY - The house is in dire need of repair. Drain of the bath tub was blocked so soapy water collected around my ankles when I took my bath. Face basin was rusty and missing the plunger. The drawers of the antique chest were dirty and unusable. Floor boards were sinking, roof paint peeling. Pity. It’s a must visit for breakfast and tour of the house. Stay optional

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at the Degas House. I will pass on the kind words to Sharon, Alma and Miss D. They are fantastic and breakfast is always woderfiul. There is no elevator in the home as it's historical and an elevator would ruin the history of the home which is dated back to the 1850's. We are a bed and breakfast and our office hours are from 9am to 6pm Monday - Friday and until noon on Saturday. We do check our voicemails and would have responded to any additional request you may have had. Thank you again. Kathy Orta

I stayed on the third floor in the Gatson room, the room was okay clean, there aren't any windows in this particular room, tv, no phone within room, the do offer breakfast every morning from 8-10 which is pretty good, there is no elevator on property so be prepared to climb stairs overall great area close to everything, the rooms on second floors are nices and roomier than the 3rd floor.

Thomas, Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent stay at the Degas House. The room you chose is a Garret - in old Paris time, the artists took over the attic spaces as they wanted a quiet space so they could rest during the day and play all night. We do not have an elevator - this is a historic home and an elevator would compromise the preservation of the home. We hope you would return and stay with us - there are many other rooms on the second floor. Kindest regards Kathy Orta

A worthy B&B for a NOLA house experience
I’m from this NOLa neighborhood so I’m biased: the tour was great- more than I expected, very cultural; covered the artist, his family, his art, and NOLa history in 1800’s. The home has all the Victorian charm of 1850’s. The WiFi never worked on the 3rd floor. Also, 3rd floor cools off but be prepared to let AC do the cooling over a few hours upon arrival. I might do 2nd floor next time. The breakfasts were simple & delicious. Enjoyable chats with the staff. Great location. Cable was basic package and didn’t really have any attractive channels. Love the provided sketch pad & pencils as I had a 13yrold artist with me.

When they answered, they said “it is not a hotel”
Good side-great room and breakfast. Bad-another guest easily broke into room saying it was hers. Interior locks are cheap. All electric items were unplugged, so I had to move heavy furniture, including a 200lb plus bed to get things to work. Staff was aware that previous users had unplugged but did not address. Took awhile to reset alarm as normal buttons did not function. Worst issue was tv not properly set to work. Multiple voice mails seeking help were not returned for days and staff did not staff office during posted hours. When I finally got a response, was told that “this is not a hotel.” So bottom line, fine spot unless there is a problem because then you are on your own.

Overall, I was not in the house that is advertised in the photo. The pool was dirty our entire trip. They didn’t start cleaning it until we physically got there and it was way to dark to go swimming in it. It didn’t start clearing up until the actual day that we were leaving. The house was in poor condition. The walls were peeling in the bathroom. The shower and bathtub was peeling and carried a stench. It literally looked like a family just left and said here you go now you can stay. The interior wasn’t pleasant and the day we left, someone physically came in and left his wallet. I’m assuming he ran out once he realized that we hadn’t checked out yet. It was creepy and we ran out as soon as we saw the wallet. Someone had to be staying in the garage while we were there. We kept hearing noises all the time. I have pictures of the bathroom by the way-gross and disappointing unfortunately

The staff is very friendly and the house is in a nice neighborhood - about a mile from City Park. If you don't have a car, you can usually get a Lyft/Uber within 5 minutes. The breakfasts are also amazing. We stayed in the Josephine room, which is quite spacious. It's an old house and a little worn in parts. For example one of the faucet handles in the shower kept coming off. Although the neighborhood is fairly quiet, ound carries through the house. The staff was very loud when they were getting breakfast ready. Also, the house has a lot of events. There was a wedding and a fashion show going on while we were there, but fortuneatly they didn't go too late.

The house is beautiful, the breakfast is wonderful. The air-conditioning in the Josephine room never worked while we were there, had to sleep with the windows open- they did bring us a box fan. We reported the ac issue the day we arrived and our third day there, all we received was the box fan. We are fortunate we were there in February and not July or we wouldn't have survived the heat and humidity. It's an old house with quirks but the ac going out is a deal breaker.

Our room shower was not clean and was dripping loudly throughout the night. When we woke up early to catch our flight, we realized there was not soap in the room. We were only staying that 1 evening and were here for a wedding. We are extremely disappointed by the above comments and would like to address anything that we can do to help match our other guest's reviews that stayed at the historic home of Edgar Degas House Museum built in 1850. Our home has been reviewed similarly to a Museum Castle in France, where there are no ropes and guests can stay in that period of life also. Please let me know if something was not work in the room? Also note, that we do not have anyone on staff in the evenings and on Sundays, as we send out instructions on how to access the LockBox with code. We would be happy to extend a stay when you're in town once again complimentary if you choose. We included free Gourmet Creole Breakfast with Bloody Mary or Mimosa daily, Decatur of Sherry, water, sodas, small refrigerator, wifi, cable and street or lot parking. We are very much about our guest's experiences and while visiting with us for three days, we would have been happy to change your room or addressed any problems. Thanks to Expedia for allowing us to respond to this review. The Degas House has a proud heritage including many awards, and 5-star reviews to support our 22-year history of having a great product and superior service. The gentleman that wrote this review is clearly not the same gentleman that made this booking. The Degas House has a vacation property from a different period in history and on the water in a tropical setting circa 1960. The Degas House Museum, which celebrates the French Impressionist Master is a circa 1850 house, established in an old New Orleans neighborhood. These two houses are distinctly different! We have never had any confusion between these two houses and the two settings before this one! The complaint regarding air conditioning was due to the failure of our a/c vendor, who failed to replace a secondary back up unit on schedule. The A/C Vendor's response was to install temporary portable a/c units, as the back up for the fully functioning main a/c unit, until the new unit was shipped and was then installed! A small amount of mold was discovered in the outside pool bathroom shower stall and was immediately removed. Degas House wants the reader to understand that a partial refund was offered to this party, due the inconvenience of the temporary a/c units, but was not accepted by our guests and the offer is still on the table. The Degas House is proud to represent such a unique part of world history. Distinguished by the French Ministry of Culture, a 25-year history of press from various parts of the world, especially France and the US. We are also happy to offer a different product on Bayou St. John, that many families have been excited to occupy because of it's proximity to the Bayou and the pool. So enjoyed meeting with you. Feel free to call back if you would like any other information about Edgar Degas stay in New Orleans or about his 18 painting done, during his visit with Family in New Orleans.

Loved this hotel!
This B&B is worth every penny. The service and staff were excellent. The history behind the location makes one feel like a part of New Orleans and a nice tour of the hotel is included. The made to order breakfast is delicious! I highly recommend The Degas House and look forward to staying here next time I am in this beautiful and culture-rich city.

Checking in was terrible, very confusing on what the process is. The cooking staff was excellent, along with the food. Being an old historical house, you would figure it would be in better shape. Disappointed in its condition, the location was good.

We are so sorry we did not see your response sooner. If you respond back and let us know what was wrong with your room, we will correct immediately. We only know about these things when our guests talk to us. Again, I apologize as we are a small staff and I was taking care of father/family medical emergency. Degas House Museum, Courtyard and Inn is a special place. Meeting people from around the world during our daily Gourmet Creole Made to Order breakfast or our rare Herons during mating season. Please remember The Degas House on your next visit.

Uncomfortable mattress. Thin linens. Low quality sparse toiletries. Overall shabbiness.

We very much appreciate your comments. If it was not for our guests informing The Degas House staff, we would not know about these things. Just wish you would have expressed to us while your here. We use 1000 thread count Egyptian Cotton sheets and must have gotten mixed us with some of the older ones, which were ready to be disposed of. I do apologize that we did not live up to our normal standard of 4 plus ratings for our rooms, breakfast and staff.

Felt like college days
Well i must say my weekend was a bit of a nightmare. I am a frequent visitor to the city and in the interest of diversity i decided to splash out for a stay at the Degas House. Without question the house and staff are top notch. The problem lies in the fact that the total lack of soundproofing between rooms makes the place little better than a youth hostal. Friday night i suffered through a batchelorette party that went on until 330am in the neighboring room. Saturday night the afterparty for the wedding did not end until 430am also in the neighboring room. Sunday night was relatively peaceful until 1230am when my neighbors returned and proceeded to have a very loud fight! Thankfully this ended relatively quickly and peace finally prevailed. So you see i am very disappointed with my stay. Also bed was very uncomfortable

Opps sorry, We have listen and taken steps to make sure our Bridal parties book both rooms in the future. It's guests like you that make us a better place to host our visitors to New Orleans and the Degas House experience. Please remember we will be happy to give you a $50 off a night, on your next stay. We booked late at night after a snafoo with our previous accommodations. An employee got there as soon as she could to get us settled and even arrived with beers! Room was cute, tons of pillows! Breakfast in the morning was filling and tasty and they offered up lots of advice for things to do.

Dearest Erin, It was a pleasure meeting you and being so kind and patience while I fought the French Quarter Festival Traffic to get back to Degas House. Please remember if you book again we offer a credit for return guests.
