“Location Perfection”

If you plan on hanging out in the French Quarter, this location and hotel can't be beat. And the Desire Restaurant which might appear to be tourist trap, is fantastic. The Christmas decorations were beautiful.

“Busy French Quarter Historic Hotel”

Rooms were smaller than expected, even after paying for an upgrade. Front desk appeared understaffed at rush times and this might have made the staff a little brusque about taking time to answer questions. Other staff were very nice and professional. Hotel lobby is beautiful, old New Orleans. Hotel is right on Bourbon St.

“Did not meet expectations”

It's an old building, so you can expect a level of old world charm, but, at this price and location, discoloration on the walls in the lavatory and roaches. EW!!!!

Area recommendations
With family? Stay a couple blocks off Bourbon, there are hotels a plenty in the vicinity Quarter. Also up river in the residential part of N.O. there are top notch places that are quiet and within walking distance of Bourbon.
Getting around
Walk and Trolleys get you anywhere you care to be.
Nightlife
One Word...Fritzelsjazz!!
Other
Here is a tip for you budget minded beer drinkers. Forget about paying six bucks for a Heini on Bourbon from one of the walk in bars. Most blocks off Bourbon have convenience stores to supply the locals with smokes and drinks and snacks. You can get a 20 oz Heini in a can in these places for $2.75!

“not impressed”

For a four star hotel, I was not impressed. We did not have hot water for tea or coffee in the morning, or a refriderigator in the room..

Comment from the hotel's management
We appreciate your choosing to stay with us at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, but we are extremely disappointed to know that it did not meet your expectations. The best, locally roasted coffee and hot tea is available in our PJ’s Coffee Café located on the lobby level and is also offered by room service, if you prefer. While mini refrigerators do not come standard in our guest rooms, we do gladly honor requests for them to be delivered to your room. We hope that when you find chance to visit New Orleans again, that you give us another try. Thank you for your feedback.

“Location, location, location”

Smack in the middle of Bourbon Street's sleaze, but quite safe and serene, the Royal Sonesta offers a luxurious haven in walking distance of so many attractions in the French Quarter, lower Canal Street, casino, and surroundings. The room was a fair size and well-appointed. Hotel staff were courteous, competent , and attentive. Room service, mini-bar, and restaurant charges very high. No freebies that you might expect in this price-range, such as breakfast, airport shuttle, parking, etc. We did however get a free mid-week upgrade to a room w/balcony.

Area recommendations
The cluster of high rise national chain hotels that service the casino, aquarium, and lower Canal Street are fairly convenient to the French Quarter. If you have business at Tulane University and wish to be near the Garden District, there are choices along St Charles Avenue with charming, frequent, but slow, trolley cars that run from the bottom of Carrolton Ave. all the way to Canal St. across from Bourbon St. Get off at Lee Circle and walk 2 blocks toward the river for the Warehouse District, to visit the D-Day and World War II museums. There are half a dozen other museums in this vicinity, and major additions to the WWII museum are under construction.
When to go
It is drop-dead hot and humid from May through October. Avoid Mardi Gras unless that is your primary objective. Winter weather is pretty mild, however you will see the locals donning ski hats and parkas any time the temperature drops below 65F. There are frequent tropical-style afternoon thunderstorms so a good umbrella can be very useful.
Nightlife
The really hip jazz scene and at least one terrific restaurant are in a little cluster on Frenchman St. on the southwestern fringe of the French Quarter.

“Right on Bourbon Street”

The hotel lobby is 5 stars. The room was 3 stars at best. I paid for a room with a street view and balcony. I got a window room facing another building.

Comment from the hotel's management
While we appreciate your choosing to stay at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, we are sincerely sorry that you were given a different room than you’d reserved. Please know that this does not normally happen, and our staff does their best to accommodate all of our guests’ preferences. And, please know that our 2nd through 5th floor guest rooms are being renovated and updated to a modern, New Orleans influenced décor. Thank you again for your review, and we hope you come back to see us!

“The Best on Bourbon Street”

Just came back from 5 wonderful days in New Orleans - French Quarter - The Royal Sonesta was fabulous. We stayed on the top (7th) floor and enjoyed the benefits of the club level (free breakfast every morning and free cocktails every evening. Definetly worth the money. Rooms were clean and everyone was helpful.

Comment from the hotel's management
We’re so happy to know that our R Club concierge level on the 7th floor met your expectations of a luxurious stay! We greatly appreciate this feedback of your experience in the Private Club Lounge where we serve daily breakfast, afternoon coffee & tea with fresh baked goods, along with cocktails & hors d’oeuvres from 5 to 8 p.m. The 26 guestrooms and suites in the R Club also offer morning and evening housekeeping service, fresh flowers in-room daily, and 24-hour concierge service among other luxury conveniences. We’re looking forward to your next visit!

“Lovely Hotel in a Very Loud Block of the FQ”

Get a room in the "tower," away from Bourbon Street. Avoid the restaurant & coffee shop.

Area recommendations
Eat at the Oceana Grill around the corner on Conti St. Have the crispy duck!
Comment from the hotel's management
Thanks for choosing to stay with us at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. We appreciate your review and take guests’ feedback seriously. We sincerely apologize that PJ’s Coffee Café and Desire Bistro & Oyster Bar did not meet your expectations of locally roasted coffee and fresh Gulf seafood. This is not the normal feedback that we receive about our food and beverage outlets. You may not know that Desire Oyster Bar has won “Best Seafood Gumbo” at the 2011 Annual United Way “Got Gumbo” Cook-off, and PJ’s Coffee has been named the City’s Favorite Coffee House by The Times-Picayune ‘Readers Choice Awards.’
