“Very inexpensive but beautiful, no frills but everything we needed”

We were happy to find something so inexpensive in Manhattan. The decor is really beautiful with gorgeous cherry woodwork everywhere. The rooms were clean. The staff was wonderful. There's no lobby to speak of and no coffee but plenty of coffee shops within a block or two. This was our first adventure into a shared bathroom hotel. It was no big deal and totally worth the money we saved. There are four bathrooms on each floor and one was always available and they were kept up well. I was happy I remembered my flip flops to shower in and thankful for the sink in our room. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone willing to sacrifice some non-essentials to save a lot of money.

“Cheap and Affordable”

We got there at 6 am and check in was at 3 pm, didn't sleep on the plane so we were walking zombies. The check in guy early in the morning was SUPER RUDE, the other worker at night was rude as well. The only nice and friendly one was the afternoon blonde hair worker. He let us check in @ 1pm and gave us a room on the 7th floor which was clean. The shared bathroom/ shower didn't bother me given that it was a low budget hotel. Good location. 3 blocks from Union Square. The place is a kind of old but good if your on a budget.

“Good value for the unfussy traveler”

This place gives you a great value for its location. What it doesn't deliver are the comforts of a modern hotel. Whether you will love it or grit your teeth will depend on your personality and the type of traveler you are. For starters, the rooms don't have private bathrooms. That's right, you share the bathroom with other rooms. (Specifically, every 10 rooms share 2 bathrooms, which are in the hallway.) My room didn't even have a sink. The rooms are very small and somewhat spartan. But here's why I gave the place 5 stars overall: the bathrooms were sparkling clean and almost always available. And the room, while small, was tastefully and comfortably furnished. The free wifi worked great, as did the window air conditioner. The desk staff was friendly and helpful. And the location can't be beat. If you're an adventurous traveler, if you're okay with the old-school two-star European hotels, or if you're looking for a wacky bargain, this is a good bet.

“Pleasantly Surprised”

My wife and I were a bit nervous about the whole sharing a bathroom with the entire floor thing, but to our surprise there was two bathrooms on every floor and they were extremely clean, up-to-date, and we never had to wait to us them.....as far as the rest, lots of character and great neighborhood. Hope you enjoy as much as we did!

“Great for the Price and Location”

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel 17. There were three of us in the three person room my boyfriend, his 14 year old son and myself. It was definitely the perfect centrally located hotel. They had all we needed; one twin and full bed, some soap a shower and toilet and a tv to check the weather of the storm. We arrived on Friday before hurricane Irene and were scheduled to depart on Sunday but, our flight was delayed until Wednesday because of hurricane Irene. We were in a safe location not in the Red zone and needed to stay three more nights. It was not as good of a deal as when I booked our first two nights originally through Expedia but we were glad we didn't have to go looking for another hotel because this one was so affordable and we had settled in. Our room was on the top 8th floor which was a great view! We had a view of the Empire State Building. We could open the windows and get fresh air in or turn on the a/c.

Area recommendations
This neighborhood Gramercy was great. We were just a few blocks from Union Square which is where you can catch the Subway, go shopping or visit the farmer's market and get all kinds of food. I bought a lot of food from the farmer's market because I like to eat local and organic fresh foods.
What to pack
Bring a backpack with only essentials. I have found it is much easier to bring only carry on for many reasons: no baggage fee, no worry about the airline loosing your luggage and if you have to transfer between planes you're all set to walk over to the next gate. I started a list a week or two before leaving so I could add and subtract form it. : 1 t-shirt, 1 tank-top, 1 long sleeve shirt, 2 pairs of shorts (which only one I wore), 2 pairs of underwear, two pairs of socks, leggings (as pajama pants), light windbreaker, compact umbrella, deodorant, small toothpaste, floss, hair gel, two hair binders, 2 small bars of soap, q-tips, moist towelettes, feminine products, small digital camera and battery charger, and itinerary. I had checked the weather before going and packed accordingly and also planned on buying a few clothing items while there. Also if you really need something you can buy it there. For instance we ended up staying longer than expected and I my boyfriend and I wanted to be able to shave. So I bought one razor and we then tossed it at the hotel knowing we wouldn't be bale to bring it back since we only were using carry on bags.

“Hotel 17 is Worth the Price”

For the budget traveler, Hotel 17 is a successful stay. If you are expecting decadence, bellhops, or larger rooms, you should spend more money somewhere else. I stayed one night in New York City on a twin bed with a shared bathroom. The room was in a quiet location away from the street and on the 7th floor. It had a firm mattress, a small desk, a TV, and a safe to keep things you don't want nicked. I guess they just want folks to feel very secure, so it doesn't hurt to use it. The room was clean as was the shared bathrooms, though you will need to bring your own soap and towel (as well as other shower/bath items) when you go there. These are provided in the room. There were only two shared bathrooms (and only one with a sink, oddly), so you will need to time your visits accordingly. There's always bathrooms on other floors to visit if you really need to. I thought the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The guys at the front desk even dressed in hotel uniforms as a nice touch. The location of the hotel is excellent as it is away from a lot of traffic and in relative close walking distance to Union Square on 14th street. Nearby, the Gramercy Cafe is quite good for breakfast and Academy Records and CDs is excellent for music shopping. I would definitely stay at Hotel 17 again if the price maintains its current level.

“Jean Louis”

Very good, excellent location, very convenient. Subway very close from which you can go everywhere you want. I was overlooking the garden, very calm. Bathrooms in very good condition. Don't worry about sharing them. To recommend.
