“Good hotel on a budget”
The staff was extremely helpful. When we first arrive we had a problem with the heating in our room (which was kind of a big issue since we went for Christmas), but the staff gave a new room immediately (they even upgrade us at no extra cost). The hotel is conveniently located near restaurants and a metro station, also within walking distance of the M60 bus stop (if you are coming from LGA this can be really useful). Overall a good hotel, nothing fancy but just what you may need if visiting the city for a few days.
“Never again!”
Although this hotel appears charming from the outside, it is very dirty, and not renovated on the inside. The elevator, literally, holds only one or two persons. The stairs are steep, and smell of urine. The carpets are worn, torn, and filthy. The front desk people are unpredictable. Some were nice and helpful, others were very rude. our room was either freezing or sweltering. The old-school furnace hissed all night. It was not a comfortable hotel at all.
“Pleasantly surprised in New York”
Great little hotel. Clean and comfortable room. Good heat! Right next to metro station. Would definitely stay here again.
“Basic hotel in good location”
Very basic hotel with an elevator that worked sporadically. I was on the 5th floor in a room with private bath. People who write about how inexpensive it is were likely sharing bath facilities. My room averaged much more than the shared rate. A block and a half to the subway though - a good base.
“Nice hotel at nice prices”
Hotel Alexander is a nice "budget" (at New York prices) hotel in a great quiet neighborhood. Exellent location for exploring New York. 2 short blocks to the 96th st. subway station. Slow and small, but steady elevator! Nice, if not too knowledgeable people in the reception. We stayed for 4 nights in a double-room with bath. Bathroom seemed new and both room and bath was very clean. Will absolutely go back!
“Not Impressed”
The service was absolutely EXCELLENT. Everyone at the front desk was curteous , helpful, & friendly. If this hotel was rated by service, it would be a 5 star hotel! However, I was disappointed with the actual physical hotel. There is a "condemned" sign posted on the front door of the hotel, & an additional sign posted, stating that only the basement area is condemned. That was very strange & somewhat unsettling. It seems more like a hostel for traveling college students. Many rooms have shared bathrooms, but you can pay more for a private bath. However, the rooms are very clean. The pillows are all lumpy & very flat. The bottom sheets are all flat not fitted, & keep pulling up. We didn't understand that. No fridges in the room, so don't bring leftovers back to your room. The lounge & baggage check room area are minimal. The lounge closes around 10pm. Very tiny elevator. If you have a decent amount of luggage, you will have to make several trips on this elevator. Small narrow hallways. Poor views from rooms. We looked out at an alley with trash cans. We found that there are comparable priced hotels in this same area that are real hotels with great amenities, private baths, workout rooms, etc. We had friends staying at one of them, & we wished that we were staying there also but it was too late! The location is excellent. Stores, places to eat, parks, & subway very near. The neighborhood is great. We prefer to stay in a regular Name Brand hotel next time, in the same neighborhood.
“Upscale Hostel fit for the UWS!!!”
This was a really great experience. The staff was friendly, the neighborhood is extremely nice, close to the train, and I would definately stay at the Hotel Alexander again!!!
“Very Impressed”
It was very clean, staff was very nice, easy to find and close to train station for easy access to all parts of NYC
“Good value for the money”
Price abd location met my needs.
“Good deal for Upper West Side hotel if you don't have high expectations”
I did not have high expectations and chose this hotel as it's near my aunt's apartment in the Upper West Side, and I am very familiar with the neighbourhood. The room we had was clean, and functional. We were on the ground floor, at the corner of our building, and our two windows looked out onto alleys and the backs of other buildings. Hotel Alexander is only about 5 minutes' walk from the 96th St subway station (on the 1,2,3 red line) and you could get down to Times Square/42nd St in about 15 minutes on the subway. Central Park's just about 10 minutes' walk from the hotel. We hardly spent any time in our hotel room except to sleep - and the beds were comfortable, the air con was functional in the 100-degree summer heat, and it's a relatively quiet neighbourhood. We felt safe walking back to the hotel at night and the streets were well-lit. The staff were helpful - but amenities are basic. When we arrived and were allocated our room, we found we didn't have bath towels - our expectations were so low we thought this was the deal. We were pleasantly surprised when the staff at the reception said we must have checked in too early and the housekeeper hadn't put our towels in our room yet!
