More like an hourly motel

Posted Oct 19, 2014
The highlight of this stay was the lobby, which was beautiful and historic. The room was not only suffering from extreme neglect, but was the lowest quality of every feature available. The mattress felt like a cot, the bedding was rough and not breathable, the walls were stained and paint was peeling. The furniture was mismatched and ranged from mid-century modern to cheap laminate from the 70's. Not only was this an uncomfortable stay, it is truly a shame that the there has been no attempt to preserve the charm of a such a historic, landmark hotel.

good location to the empire building

Posted Oct 18, 2014
It's a big hotel with a convenience for a short walk to many events, restaurants and theaters in the mid-Manhattan. The hotel is pretty old w/o remodeling to improve a living condition. The breakfast (5000 club) room with two windows is in a poor condition which is too small for many guests. The service's hospitality stinks as usually!

Perfectly fine

Hotel Penn is in a great location - old hotel but perfectly fine for our needs. Always a great buzz in the vast lobby, staff friendly and helpful. Good luggage storage system.

Hotel Reception Staff Unhelpful

Posted Oct 17, 2014
Pros: The central location.
Cons: As above
Location: Empire State Building and Times Square
The first room offered was unacceptable. The carpet was old (due for replacement) and filthy. Also, the room was in a very noisy location. The second room was small but better. Some days we were not provided with cups for water. The Reception desk staff were abrupt and unhelpful.

Do not have high expectations

This hotel has a great location, but do not expect high standards. The hotel is very old and has not been re-decorated in a number of years.

Well, the location is good...

Posted Oct 17, 2014
Pros: It's in a great location.
Cons: It could stand to be updated. And the majority of the staff could use a lesson or two in customer service.
Location: Right across the street from M.S.G. and Penn Station. One block from Macy's and 2 blocks from the Empire State Building. Easy walk to Times Square.
This hotel is famous for being the oldest hotel in NYC and it certainly shows. While the room was clean and reasonably comfortable, the carpets were very worn and the bathrooms and lighting definitely needed to be updated. There seems to be a problem with the room keys "losing their memory" and we had to have ours reloaded 2 times in 4 days. This took quite a bit of time, since they generally only have 2 people working the front desk at any given time. Good points were that the room was fairly soundproof to outside noise and it did have room darkening blinds. Oh and if you plan on staying in the city for any amount of time after checking out in the morning, be prepared to pay them to keep your bags if you don't want to carry them around with you.

Location great

If you want somewhere to just dump your bags and see New York this is for you, it was clean but very old fashioned plug sockets and lamps scary until you get the hang of them
