“Great location in Nice”

I had some misgivings about this hotel before checking in because it is inexpensive and it doesn't appear on recommended hotel lists in Nice, that I'm aware of. I was pleasantly surprised. The location was great - in the center of downtown, across from a great shopping area, and a short walk from the beach promenade. The hotel sits on a small side street just off one of Nice's main north-south streets (Ave. Jean Medicin). This street is traffic-free, except for city trams connecting to the train station and other areas. A nice neighborhood, with a good restauarant next to the hotel. I learned the hotel has been refurbished, and it shows. At first glance the interior appears old, and the elevator very small. However, my room was very attractive, spacious (by European standards), and spotlessly clean. The hotel staff were always professional, courteous, and helpful. I'd definitely stay there again.

Area recommendations

The beachfront promenade (Promenade des Anglais and Quai des Etats-Unis) is a must-see for every visitor.

When to go

I went in early September. The weather was great and the city was not crowded with tourists. The prime shopping area is called the Nice Etoile, located on Avenue Jean Medicin, almost across the street from the Hotel Grand Florence. Many other shops are located on the avenue.

Getting there

I arrived by TVG train, which is a great way to cover long distances in France. Nice also has an airport.

Getting around

Walking, buses, and trams (both are bargains) are great ways to get around. I highly recommend walking in the downtown area. This will expose you to sights of unexpected beauty, such as a flowering shrub in front of a house, or a wonderful park near the bus station. The prime shopping area is located on Nice's main north-south street, the Avenue Jean Medicine. A modern shopping mall (the Nice Etoile) is located there. Many other shops line the avenue, which is traffic-free except for the city trams.

“looks can be deceiving”

The Hotel de Florence was just alright. Nothing special, and the pictures looked better than the actual reality. It was too small and bordering on a bit shabby for the price. We stayed at a hotel in Paris for the same price that was so much better by comparison. I would never stay there again. There are better options.

“Pleasant, comfortable, inexpensive, would go back”

This hotel was a great location for me. It's smack dab halfway in between the train station and the beach, and it's an easy walk to both and I felt safe there in that area. The hotel is on a short well lit pedestrian walkway and I parked my motorcycle right outside the hotel along with a few other bikes - i.e. The bike was OK there over night outside. The hotel is clean and comfortable and the staff were very nice and helpful. The room was small compared to US standards, but most European hotels are small so it's just something to get used to if you don't want to spend a lot. I thought the price was very good especially for the quality. Only downsides were that the bed blankets had some small stains, but they appeared clean and the sheets were perfectly white (and you sleep in the sheets not the blankets anyway). Bed was comfortable as I recall and there was my favorite: a bidet in the bathroom: YES! Location is near shopping: Nice Etoile mall and Galeries Lafayette, and there are two very pleasant and tasty cafe/restaurants right next door. I would recommend this to my friends and family.

Area recommendations

I do not know Nice all that well, but there were a few blocks nearer the train station that I stayed away from especially at night as I did not feel safe there. I liked the market area just south of Galeries Lafayette near the beach as there was a flea market there on the Monday that I enjoyed perusing and it's an older area too with interesting buildings and nice restaurants and cafes where you can sit and relax and watch people.
