“A Hidden Gem”

This hotel s a hidden gem. Stayed here on new years eve 2011, travelled into Rio for new year celebrations. It is easy to travel back and forth to Rio from here takes about 20 minutes and costs around 50 Reals. Given that the hotel is more than half the cost of a basic Rio hotel, it is better staying here. The staff are great and the views across the bay to sugar loaf and Christ the redeemer are superb.

“ok, but not great. not a do over.”

The location was close to the ferry, but not close enough to walk so we had to taxi to it to get to ferry to travel to Rio each day for 10 Real. Then once off the ferry we had to again taxi to Copacabana or Ipenema, Christ the Redeemer, which was another 35 Real. Hotel staff speaks very little English. We had expected that we would be able to book tours for site seeing or snorkeling, etc. through the hotel, but no. They could get a tour for us for 200 Real per person, but could not articulate whats included. it rained most of the 5 days we were pretty limited for activities. The room was ok but bathroom tiny and the shower horrible. No hot water and the bottom of the door leaked water into the bath room. The A/C was window units. The rooms were called apartments but had no coffee pot, pans or anything to even boil water. No plates, etc. The WiFi was not working. Sometimes it worked in the lobby or the restaurant, but never worked in the room. We did complain on day 1, but no effect. The food/wine in the restaurant were good and reasonably priced. The restaurant staff was good, even if their English wasn't good, they were very attentive. The pool was clean, and the outdoor bar looked nice, but no bar service! We likely won't go back to Rio, too far to go for too little sunshine for our budget $, but if we did go, we would likely stay in Rio vs. staying at Niteroi.
