“great location”

The room was quiet and clean but the lighting was dismal - except in the bathroom! The TV was in a furniture cabinet and the only way one could view it was to sit directly in front of the cabinet which did not face the bed. There was only one chair. One of the elevators had an electrical issue; it would not move unless one pressed the button for your floor and kept in depressed until lift off. Since we were only staying one night, we did not bother to seek a remedy for these issues. I would, in fact, consider staying there again strictly due to the excellent location. I read a review on a travel website about a German restaurant across the street; we ate there and we were very pleased with our meals. The location is definitely the best feature of this hotel.

“An interesting historical retreat”

The Governor Dinwidddie Hotel is an older, renovated hotel in the historically interesting Old Town area of Portsmouth. Upon entering the hotel, you feel that history has taken place here. For history buffs (particularly naval and sea history), restoration enthusiasts or vistors just wanting a quiet place in a quiet waterfront town, this is a good choice. It's only a short walk to the Portsmouth - Norfolk ferry, which at a few dollars roundtrip is one of the best tourist opportunities in the area. There are good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel, particularly in newly-restored Gosport. A wonderful breakfast is served and included in the room rate. One problem we had was locating the air conditioner controls, but a call to the front desk solved it.

Traveler's tip

Try the historical, locally famous and reasonably priced Lobscot Restaurant near the hotel. It specialiszes in seafood, but serves a broad menu. As you walk towards Gosport from the hotel, there are numerous good restaurants, pubs, and sidewalk cafes.
