"Great experience for the money."
I really enjoyed staying at the Cedars Inn. It's an old manor that has been turned into a hotel. Our room was quiet and very comfortable. The staff were friendly. The hotel has a restaurant and pub, which had a nice selection of food and ales. Additionally, breakfast was served in the conservatory, with lots of natural light, and made-to-order meals. The grounds were lovely, with lots of flowers and birds. All in all, a great experience. We would definitely go back and stay here again.

"Reasonable price for a good hotel"
This hotel is in need of refurbishment, particularly where the window are concerned, but look at the price you are being charged and you will find this hotel gives real value for money. The rooms are comfortable our bed was very good and we had a good nights sleep, the bathroom was small, but how many people do you want to fit into a bathroom, the water pressure was abysmal and difficult to control, but that along with the windows that were metal with no stays and these could be blown by the smallest breeze were the only 2 points we were unhappy with. The breakfast was superb, with helpful waiters and waitresses and plenty of it. All the wingers who have written bad reports about this hotel want to get into the real world and find out how much more the Woolacombe Hotel costs and pay that, then come back and tell us it is not good value for money. Well done Royal Hotel, thank you for a lovely stay.

"If you want a peaceful break"
If you want a peaceful break look no further. The New Inn is, as you would expect from Clovelly, a small quaint hotel. The decor is Arts and Crafts in keeping with the architecture which is in some places a little jaded (mainly in the foyer), but would you expect anything else from an 'olde worlde' inn? We stayed in room two which was bright, warm and well decorated - a lovely touch was the old books available to read on the shelves. We sat for hours relaxing on the window seat, just listening to the local wildlife and birdsong due to the fact that there are no cars within the village. The bathroom was modern and exceptionally clean, so no complaints there. We ate our evening meal in the bar, which was basic but again in keeping with the overall feeling of the hotel, and the food was well cooked with plenty on our plates. The staff in both the bar and reception were professional, but informal enough to make us feel very welcome and the full English breakfast, served in the lovely, beamed Hamlyn room watched over by a huge portrait of the Lady Hamlyn herself, was really very good. Nicley cooked and again plenty of it! If you want a break which is slightly different with a trip back in time, and you are the type to sit and watch the stars ( due to the lack of light pollution) and enjoy the local wildlife. This is the place for you. Thank you New Inn for a welcoming nights stay. We will stay a little longer next time.

"Will never go there again"
The toilet was not clean The toilet seat was falling apart. The painted on the tiles in the bathroom was peeling off. There were mould spores on the bath mat. A sign on the window stated it should be locked when leaving the room. The window lock was broken so it could not be locked. We shut the window and when we returned it had been left open by the cleaning staff. There was a lot of noise from the hotel lounge until the early hours of the morning. The sink and bath were dirty with mould spores along the bath seal and in the tile grout. A very unpleasant experience.

Pocket Guide: Devon North Devon Coast Independent Hotels

The east of this varied coastline features the deep 'combes' (wooded valleys) of Exmoor, which plunge down to the sea, most dramatically at Lynton and Lynmouth. Westward are traditional English seaside towns with long sandy beaches (Ilfracombe, Woolacombe). Beyond the characterful towns of Barnstaple and Bideford, Clovelly is a picture-book, whitewashed fishing village, while Hartland Point is known for its dramatic, storm-battered cliffs.
