Refreshingly clean & well appointed room with plenty of space. Really surprised at the quality of the place given the low price

Cannot be classified as a Hotel
Posted Jan 14, 2012
Pros: Size of room was good.
Cons: Train noise from busy railway line. Smell of damp.
Location: Slap bang between busy A1 and East Coast Railway line.
The Ashiana is an indian Restaurant. We stayed in a block of ten rooms at the back of the Restaurant. The location is just off the A1 (on a roundabout) and around 500 yards from the main East Coast Railway line. The room we stayed in was large enough but I believe suffered from some damp. There were air fresheners plugged in when we arrived which seemed great but the smell of damp couldn't be masked on day 2 of our stay. Arrival time was quoted as 15:00 on our booking form - not so. We arrived at 15:30 and were informed that we could not get into the room until 17:00 - when the restaurant opened. Check in was the counter in the Indian Restaurant. We were given the keys and told to post them through a communial letterbox when leaving after our stay. There was no breakfast offered and staff not on site 24 x 7. I do not consider the classification as 'Hotel' to be justified.

Excellent & efficient - big rooms, kept warm for our arrival on a very cold evening (other hotels please copy). Superb curry restaurant on site.

I had to be in Newark overnight with work and found this place on Hotels.com. As the place was called Ashiana Hotel, I was expecting a hotel reception, however when the cab pulled away I was left on my own in the middle of nowhere facing a closed up pub. I had to phone the numbers on the board for someone to acknowledge me. The picture posted is actually the entrance to the restaurant, I had to keep walking around the outside of the building until the lights came on. The chap did not welcome me, he just checked my booking in the log tipped out out a pot of keys and handed me one saying "number 8". I asked where it was, I had to go outside again walk down to the back of a dark car park to a row of "chalets", he did not offer to take me , he just pointed in the direction I was meant to go. The security was just a thin front door, that was that was between me and the outside..As a lone female I felt vunerable. I most certainly did not feel valued as a customer and find the description "Hotel" misleading. I would not stay there again and would not recommend it.

Convenient for Game & Country showground, Newark

The restaurant was top class, the food superb and the service excellent. HOWEVER, our stay was slightly let down by the 'jaded' decor of the room and the black mould in the shower. The shower regulator was difficult to turn on and off. Regular maintenance of the facilities was all that let this hotel down.

Perfectly adequate

We were attending a wedding nearby, and this was the closest available place to stay. I would probably stay here as despite its faults, it suited our purposes. The "welcome" is non-existent. You drive up and then have to somehow attract the attention of the proprieters, which is a fun activity where success is gained entirely by chance. Once a heavy book of reservations is studied, you are led to a chalet-like row of rooms with a beautiful view of a gravel pit, railway and a glimpse of the A1 sliproad. These include some ex-office furniture, and beds that have seen better days, but all in what is quite a large room. There are several mirrors and TV works. There are electrical points in useful places. In the top office drawer is a Bible, just in case you had forgotten you were in a hotel. The bathroom was clean, with a great shower. The towels appear to have been acquired from another hotel chain, although the laundry must be different, as a large black stain down one of the towels rather neutered our positive feelings. Bathmats have been cleverly utilised to serve as hand towels, hung in a comedic fashion from a botched DIY towel rang set at an angle. All in all, the utter lack of any service or real customer interaction proved a real talking point which helped us make new friends at the wedding, so we'd like to thank the owners for that! Nevertheless, the room wasn't bad... but you don't enter with much confidence.

Large room, Motel type hotel

Large room, large bathroom, both new, clean and comfortable. Motel type hotel right on the A1. Adjoined to a decent indian restaurant which allowed me to take a curry back to my room. Would stay again, especially if I needed to be near the A1.
