Explore both of the innovative buildings containing some of the most impressive works of art from the 20th century onward.

The North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection comprises two innovative buildings holding modern pieces belonging to its namesake state. The complex has two structures on either side of the historic center, each with a light, airy atmosphere, with plenty of glass that allows sunlight to penetrate through to the exhibits. Browse the great range of 20th-century art to learn about the various schools and styles.

Admire the shiny, black curves of the avant-garde K20 Grabbeplatz building, which focuses on 20th-century works. It has many pieces typical of classical modernism, as well as works indicative of fauvism, expressionism, cubism and surrealism. Find out about the iconic Blue Rider group of German painters. Among the highlights are the paintings by Paul Klee, a former teacher at the Duesseldorf Academy of Fine Arts.

Marvel at works by painters from across the globe, including American artists such as Andy Warhol. Attend some of the thematic exhibitions that shed light on a particular style or period. The complex contains a library with a range of artistic books.

Visit the K21 Ständehaus building for more contemporary works that have been created since the 1980s. The building has a neo-renaissance style and overlooks a quiet plaza on one side and calm lake on the other. Despite its classic exterior, the inside has been converted into a modern and innovative gallery, with a glass ceiling and whitewashed walls.

Examine the works of post-modernist design, including many sculptures and objects. Wander through the photography exhibits to see how artists are framing real life. Consider the symbolism and societal context behind the artworks.

Note that the museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from late morning until late afternoon. There is a fee to enter, with discounts for youths and kids.

The two sites of the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection are separated by the bulk of the historic center. The northern K20 is a little west of the Landskrone pond and north of the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, while K21 is south of the Kaiserteich pond. Ride the U-Bahn buses and trains to any of the stations in the historic center to get here.
