Great old hotel on the market square in Helmsley,

Posted Aug 9, 2014
Pros: Friendly staff and coordinated rooms with a great garden!!
Cons: Air-conditioning would help.
Location: In the square in Helmsley a beautiful Yorkshire village
Superb restaurant and great staff even at the reception area when I had my charge rejected (later told by bank that it had been cloned) Happily accepted an alternative without comment.

OK but overpriced

We stayed at the Black Swan for 2 nights for a wedding. The staff were very friendly, and the breakfast was out of this world. The room was nicely furnished and clean, nice touch with the teddy bear on the bed. The downfall was the size of the room - for the price I'd expect to be able to walk around the room without tripping over the bed. The shower head was ludicrously low in the bath - being a tall chap it was at the same height as the middle of my chest, making showering a rather undignified affair. And though this is likely to change from person to person for me the bed was WAY too soft, and I got two very poor nights sleep and a sore back out of it.

Try the competition

The Black Swan charges serious prices compared to other hotels in the area, but fails to live up to an equivalent standard. Our room was in what is clearly an annex (but not partciularly well constructed): the temperature noticeably fell when one went from the old, original part of the hotel into the annex. Two things particularly disappointed me. First, when I ran a bath in the morning, the hot water was not particularly hot - that is a serious complaint. Secondly, which is perhaps more of a minor irritation, the newspaper I had ordered was simply not delivered. This is poor service for what was not a cheap night's stay, and next time I shall look elsewhere.

Comfortable, well run, typically British hotel

This is our second time at the Black Swan. Both times we've been very satisfied with virtually all of the features that are typically measured. In particular, the staff is most welcoming and work hard to make their guests comfortable. One small complaint this last visit: we were put in a satellite dining room for breakfast for no apparent reason, which was not as pleasant and quite inconvenient as we had to go back to the main dining room to serve ourselves. Also, it took forever for our coffee to come. However, these are minor complaints that would not prevent us from staying at Black Swan again.
