Business trip

Posted Sep 13, 2014
Lobby is inviting, room is small but comfortable. They did a good job refurbishing an order building. Henry's Restaurant has good food, variety of beverages, multiple screens throughout to allow for sports viewing, still quiet enough for casual conversations. Hotel staff was very accommodating, put my Fed Ex delivery and later my suitcase lost and found by American Airlines directly into my room in my absence. Hotel in on the southern border of U Cal Berkeley, convenient for campus activities, 10 min. walk to downtown center.

Cramped and Noisy

Posted Sep 8, 2014
To be fair, we stayed the weekend of the Berkeley vs Sacramento football game, so we knew it would get noisy - we just weren't prepared for how much! While the place is vintage, which I like, it feels very cramped. We received a full size bed instead of a queen. The location is far from quiet due to its location and full-size bar downstairs. For college students, this is like pollen to bees, lol. On the upside, the staff are very polite and courteous. The amenities are fine; standard.

Good location but otherwise disappointing

Posted Sep 8, 2014
We are regular visitors to Berkeley and were extremely disappointed by this hotel. The location is good and the staff were helpful but the amenities (small sink, shabby rooms with questionable decor, lumpy bed, creaky elevators and doors that stick) are in no way worth the relatively high price. Toilet paper and such was not replaced. Self-parking, booked for our whole stay, was initially fine but became a problem when the hotel re-sold our space for a football game, forcing us to pay for valet parking for a night. We had the impression of lack of staff training and lack of attention to detail, reflecting sloppy and perhaps cynical management. Could do much, much better.

Good staff but maintenance problems

Posted Sep 2, 2014
Pros: close to University
Cons: repair air conditioning, repair room safes, maintenance
Location: Good location
A very nice classic 1928 hotel upgraded, but with maintenance problems on items like room safes and room temperature.

Location, Location, Location, not Accommodation

Posted Sep 1, 2014
The location is great by campus. If you want parking, reserve it or take your chances on the street (we got street parking with no problem after being told reserve was filled; not offered at time of booking, so how could one know???). The room was eh. It is older, so like the charm and don't expect a modern setup. It had everything (power outlets galore, large closet, small bath, etc.) but the shape and layout were not what is currently expected. I did have a bug, not bed bug, hopping around, soooooo.

Very comfortable stay

Posted Aug 19, 2014
Pros: We enjoyed eating at the restaurant downstairs, great food and great service. Nice contemporary decor of our room.
Location: Location as above. Proximity to Telegraph Ave around the corner and the campus and art gallery practically over the road.
We are a couple who stayed in Berkeley for a long weekend. Our room was very comfortable and quiet too although this meant we were at the back of the hotel with views of the carpark. We liked being close to the lovely campus grounds. A 15 minute walk downtown or a bus right outside the hotel.

THEY HAD NO ROOM FOR US and RUINNED OUR NIGHT.

Posted Aug 19, 2014
Pros: NOTHING
Cons: WE COULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE ROOM WE PAID FOR.
We arrived at the hotel and were told they had no room for us. So, they sent us elsewhere, saying they had it all covered. When we got to the other place, they said we had "been lied to" and they had been telling the first hotel "for a week" that they didn't have room for us. While the first hotel "figured it out", we drove around for an additional hour looking for parking so we could attend a concert, which was why we had rented the room in the first place (to have a place to park, to have a place to stay and to attend the concert. An hour into the concert and us still driving around trying to secure parking, we left. In all - we got NO ROOM, NO CONCERT, and drove home upset (2 hours in the dark) WE WANT our money back - ROOM RENTAL, UNUSED CONCERT TICKETS AND WASTED GAS.

A fine place, accesible by taxi and bus.

Pros: The staff was friendly and had a helpful attitude.
Cons: The bathroom' but I realize it is an old hotel and it's hard to make those kinds of changes.
Location: It's very close to the university, convenient for people visiting.
This hotel had been renovated, but still has an old time feel. It's nice to be in a place where the rooms are different sizes. My room had a refrigerator and microwave and a large disk. The bathroom was small by modern standards and had a small sink. There is a friendly bar and restaurant on the first floor, much jazzier that mos hotels. I wouls stay here again. Note: The Expeda rate is much better than the regular hotel rate..
