“Very nice hotel”
Nice Hotel, friendly staff
“The king of hidden fees; WATCH OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
The next morning I had a bill under my door that included a 'facilities fee." This means that with taxes, parking and the "facilities fee" I paid almost double the price I negotiated. The "facilities fee" is not optional, but yet it does not show up until the next day. You will have signed for it in 'the small print." This is deceptive, and thus an unethical business practice. You are better off going to a hotel that is honest.
“Gorgeous and well-maintained, caring staff”
I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
“can't wait to go back”
The Clairemont is a georgious hotel, providing very clean and comfortable accomodations. The spectacular views are jaw dropping spectacular. The restaurants on site provide deliciously prepared food. Every thing was more than I expected. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The only disappointment I had was the lap pool was always busy and I could not use it. You must have to make reservations which I did not. Just waited for an opening and after a couple of hours gave up, so I never used the beautiful pool. The other one had too many children to enjoy a swim. Must be a busy place. However, I would rate this hotel as exceptional. A 5 out of 5 stars. Loved it. Can't wait to go back.
“not good”
The hotel has a wonderful view but that is the only positive thing I can say. We checked in and were hit with a $24.00/day parking fee. We dined that evening on the terrace with a fabulous view, but the food was just ok and our server tried but had too many tables. It took a good 15-20 min just to get our drinks. We had called the concierge prior to our arrival to help with bike rentals and they never called back. We asked for robes in our room and they never showed up. The room was a PURE room but smelled and felt very musty. The second night a group decied they could party until 4am and you could hear everything even when they calmed down. We were very dissappointed with our stay.
“Olde Timey Fancy”
The Claremont was fantastic. I love grand old hotels and this place is exactly that and more. Some of the nicest staff, great value, great swimming pool, it's more like staying at a resort than a hotel. I have every intention of staying there again someday. Please note, however, it is an old-well kept hotel, not a sleek fancy hotel. You have to be into it, but if you are... it's worth every penny and more. Two words: Cocktails, poolside.
“Should have been much better”
Overall a nice hotel in a great location. However, (1) a snafu with reservations led to an inordinately long wait to check in with no offer to do anything to make up for my time, (2) the shower in the room was not working, which we did not discover until we tried to shower in the morning, and (3) we called the front desk for a bellman at check-out time, asked for our bags to be picked up and car to be brought around, and discovered after waiting about 15 minutes that neither had been done (we carried all the luggage up ourselves and went and got our car from the valet, which had not been pulled around). Would expect far better from a 4 star hotel.
“Very classic hotel.”
I love these old hotels that have been maintained.
“Meh.”
Sure, the Claremont was a fine place to stay. No complaints about service or cleanliness. I stay in a lot of different types of hotels; I've done the W for one trip, Courtyard the next. I just try to find the best deal and best amenities for the needs of my trip. So it's not that I wasn't satisfied, it just wasn't all that. I mean, back in the day I'm sure it was a grand dame of hotels, but it felt tired and aged and for such a historic property, it seemed run-of-the-mill as far as hotels go, not too luxe. No robes in the rooms, the towels were stiff and scratchy from all the bleach. When I checked in, theperson at the front desk asked me to wait a minute "so I can see if the supervisor approves me giving you this room". I guess I didn't pass the approval, because if the room I was given was worth getting approval for, well..... Basically it was very small with a view of the rooms across from me. I didn't try the spa but the prices were about double what I normally pay. The $24 parking seemed a bit steep for a neighborhood hotel, but I did like the fact that there was free Internet in all the rooms.
“Beware of hidden charges”
The Claremont is a beautiful hotel, a landmark in the Berkeley area. I enjoyed my stay, but it ended up being much more expensive than I expected. Reviews are not permitted to mention specific rates, but just be aware that they charge a hefty fee for daily parking, and another heft fee for "services", which was explained to me as covering the cost of putting a phone in my room (which of course I never used). So with tax, the additional charges made my stay a lot more expensive than I expected. I believe that the fine print on the Expedia bookings page tells you how much the services fee is. It's roughly equal to the parking fee.
