Amazing staff

Posted Feb 24, 2015
The people here were amazing and offered the best hospitality possible. An efficient and friendly front desk made me feel right at home and the bartender made the best mojito I have had in a long time. Unfortunately, I only stayed one night, but next time I hope to spend multiple nights to spend some time at the spa.

Lovely property, could use an update

Lovely property, fabulous common areas, lobby, restaurant, bar and pool. The carpets and furniture could use an update, but over a lovely stay at a fabulous hotel.

Bellman and lady who checked us in were terrific.

Posted Feb 18, 2015
Pros: Classic, iconic and everyone aims to please.
Cons: Toilet in our otherwise neat and lovely room leaked when flushed.
Location: Fabulous proximity to everything in the Bay Area....view alone makes you want to enjoy your room!
The price from Expedia was immediately grossed up with fees and surcharges, which was offputting, but upon arrival, our desk clerk upgraded us to a bigger room which more than compensated for the problem of higher fee. Net, net, the higher cost than posted originally on Expedia was worth the room provided by the wise woman who checked us in.

Great Old lady and quite the Lady she was.

Posted Feb 10, 2015
Pros: The style and staff were great.
Cons: The building is what we call faded. Past its prime but obviously has charm. Fresh paint at least or redo hall by hall? great bones.
Location: We were happy to be close to where our son is living and working. Also very excited to see how close to Point Reyes and Sonoma and Napa.
We were in Oakland to visit our son who abruptly left NYC to start a new career in the food industry. We have friends and relatives in the area near Oakland so we went for Christmas. We had a ball and enjoyed our stay and will repeat again soon.

Pros: Staff all were incredibly helpful and personable
Cons: Remove rust and discoloration from shower door and shower floor where it meets the shower. Check locks to make sure key cards work more consistently.
It was ok. For $230 a night, I expected more. But I guess the price reflects the Claremont's "mythology", not necessarily their maintenance standard of a room. Overall, it was ok since I only spent one night to attend a training.

Pros: Beautiful, spacious common rooms. Would be a great venue for a wedding or the like.
Our room was small, but comfortable. View of the air conditioning system, but we were just there for one night and didn't really matter.

Grand hotel with Beautiful facilities & Bay Views

Posted Dec 29, 2014
Pros: Sports facilities, Paragon bar, lobby, location, views
Cons: The room doors should be replaced with heavier ones that are sealed against light and noise. Guests should be asked not to talk loudly in hallways.
Location: Great restaurants and shops all over Berkeley and North Oakland. Tilden Park and the Lawrence Hall of Science are great for kids and adults alike.
I have stayed at the Claremont approximately 35 times over the past 25 years and have seen it progress from a faded old family-owned resort to its current splendor. This visit coincided with the holidays, and again I was very impressed with the beautiful lobby decorations, including a gingerbread house big enough to house Santa and various helpers. The staff is professional and aims to please. The restaurant and bars are gorgeous; I hear the food is great, although as a former Berkeley resident with ties to Chez Panisse I never eat there. The spa is too expensive for me but use of the club facilities is a must, as guests are forced to pay a resort fee. I particularly love the fact that there's a big Pilates studio that one can use without an instructor--very helpful. The pools and gym are excellent. Now for the downside: the rooms are a mixed bag--all different sizes and configurations, and not luxurious. However, all have been renovated, as have the hallways, and are perfectly adequate. The main drawback is that the bathrooms are heated only by heat lamps and can be freezing. Sound is also a problem, as the doors are thin and unsealed, letting in lots of noise from the hallways. If your aim is to hole up in your room, you'd do better at a modern chain hotel. But if you want atmosphere, amenities and glamour, the Claremont is your kind of hotel. I wouldn't stay anywhere else.
