Class act. A grand hotel without pretentiousness.

Posted Jun 23, 2015
We recently stayed at this marvelous property in the gorgeous village of Berkeley. Resembling the grand hotels of years past, the Claremont Hotel is no faded beauty. From the friendly greeting at the door to the marvelous anything but hotel food, to the comfortable bed with really nice linens, this property is memorable and nostalgic.

Expensive but Nice

Posted Jun 20, 2015
Pros: The restaurants and the brunch
Location: The fact that this hotel is in Berkeley speaks for itself. Great restaurants and shopping, walking through the community and the parks are possible.
This hotel is very nice. It truly is a club and spa. If you stay, you must take advantage of the facilities and some of the classes such as yoga. We thought it was expensive, but given the opportunities for different workouts and relaxation, maybe we're mistaken. You be the judge. The restaurants are excellent, and the brunch is one of the best we have had.

Lovely place close to UC Berkeley

Posted Jun 4, 2015
Pros: Easy to navigate.
Cons: The live music downstairs (and the bar) could stay open longer.
Location: The locattion is obviously great. The bay area is my favorite place to visit, especially easy bay, and Berkeley a favorite haunt.
This place is elegant in a lovely location, and it is within a mile or so of the southeast entrance to the UC campus at Berkeley. The staff are really great, always ready to be helpful. Parking is easy on the premises with no drama. They had some live jazz downstairs till about 10:30 which was good. You can listen to it while having a drink or a snack (if you missed dinner). I found this place accidentally, since I decided to go to Berkeley rather late and the usual places I stay in were booked. I am glad I chose the Claremont Hotel, which I also got at a reduced rate. All in all a good experience, and I will likely go back there.

Not fun with luggage on higher floors. A 50 minute massage is now 200 dollars. Unacceptable!!!!

Graduation treat

Posted May 25, 2015
We stayed at the Claremont so that we could attend the Berkeley Business School graduation ceremony. What a treat! Great view of the bay from a large, well-appointed room, comfortable bed, good coffee at the GrabAndGo breakfast and staff who remembered your name (Well done Nellie!). The Claremont is a grand old hotel but it still works very well.

Checked into a room that was not made.

Posted May 23, 2015
Overall, my experience was average at best.it is a much older hotel, so the elevators are small and slow. The furnishings are outdated. The bed was very comfortable.

We hope to impress our guests at every turn and while we are glad you found our bedding to be comfortable, we regret if your experience was not perfect in all ways. Our hotel is historic in nature and it is disappointing if you were not impressed with our décor. Thank you for sharing your comments. We hope you will give us another chance in the future.

A Grand Hotel With Great Facilities

Posted May 15, 2015
Pros: History and charm. The Claremont was the largest resort hotel west of the Mississippi until after WWII. Great sports facilities
Cons: Guest rooms, which are basic. Beds are too soft.
Location: Restaurants--Chez Panisse, Pizzaiolo, Cesar. At the south end of the resort, La Fournee, Rick & Ann's and Peet's. Theater-Berkeley Rep. Tilden Park.
I've stayed at the Claremont at least 20 times in the past 25 years, and have seen it go from a spooky old-fashioned resort to a much nicer, more modern one. Fortunately, its charm is intact--the huge public rooms are especially impressive, with their high ceilings and attractive decor, and the bar is a hot spot with sweeping views. The Club has everything from tennis and swimming to a great gym and Pilates studio; since you'll be paying for it, you should take full advantage. The guest rooms at the Claremont are the downside: although all have been renovated over the years, they aren't luxurious by today's standards, except for the fact that many have Bay views. They can also be noisy, particularly if you're near the elevators. The other downside is that you have to pay for parking--there's nowhere else to leave your car, and it's $30 a night. But this year, the Claremont will begin a huge renovation that will bring the rooms up to the standard of the hotel, including new doors that will block out the sound from the hallways. It will also restore the lobby's original Bay View, which should be spectacular.

Your kind patronage over the years is of great value to us and we are delighted you continue to join us at The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. We certainly have a rich history to share with our guests as our property will mark its 100th Anniversary this year. Every area of our hotel is unique as the hotel was originally built as a private residence in the early days of the Gold Rush. We are continuously working hard to ensure that all areas are at their freshest with updated comforts and conveniences throughout. Thank you for sharing your feedback. Beautiful historic hotel - Abysmal Service

Posted May 13, 2015
Pros: It was close to the location of our family activities in North Oakland
Cons: Service
Location: Access in/out of the hotel is congested and remote.
The hotel is historically beautiful and the valet staff was excellent. Registration was understaffed, the furniture is worn/stained, and the Meritage restaurant service for 9am Mother's Day breakfast was abysmal in all areas to include quality of food.

We appreciate you sharing your experience and although we are glad you enjoyed the charm of our historic property and location convenient for your trip, we never like to read when a guest feels their expectations weren't met in all ways. It is truly disheartening to know that we missed the opportunity to create a better experience for you and if you were disappointed by your breakfast dining experiences. Please know that someone here is always available should any concerns arise as we would be more than happy to provide you with a stay that exceeds all that you are looking for. Thank you for your time and candid review.
