This lovely building and its grounds are a former convent and this shows in its appearance. However, a convention in the hotel resulted in a LOT of noise and activity that interfered with our stay. The old chapel—near the main lobby and adjacent to the pool—served as the primary venue for the convention. Amplified voices rang out across these open-air areas all day long. At night there was a reception in the courtyard just outside of our windows with live music, drinking, and lots of loud voices until past 11:00 pm. The next day the convention was also in the other courtyard nearby with yet more amplified voices. The hotel needs to choose either to cater to its individual clients (who pay $$$$) or to conventions. Doing both is impossible.
As someone who has stayed at multiple Oaxaca hotels, I feel that here we paid far too much for what we received. We splurged for the Gran Clase Dos Camas as part of a big birthday celebration. While our room was nice, it was not at all like pictures in terms of size, the sofa, or the bathroom, which was tiny and in dire need of renovation (this despite that the concierge said we’d been upgraded to a better room). Finally, the restaurant charges exorbitant prices. One morning we ate breakfast there (croissants, yogurt, and coffee) for $42. We ate huge breakfasts at nice places nearby for a small fraction of that cost.
It’s a lovely hotel and its gigantic staff is always friendly. But it needs to focus on client comfort at a fair price.
