“Foreigner friendly hotel, English spoken”

I liked the room, and I was impressed by the amenities. Strong WiFi connection, free pc, BBC news on tv, common OTC drugs free at the desk. Maps　of the area. Room fridge. Good breakfast at the hotel. The hotel is right near the station, so you can jump on easily .. but first you need to go back to Osaka Station and then go on to your destination. Downside: not a lot of local restaurants, Supermarket a ways away, having to first go to Osaka Station in order to get to subways, etc.

“Good stay”

Easy to find, close to the Shinkansen, and a great bargain for a decent sized room with private bath. Maybe most important for a summer visit: Air Conditioned. Like much of Japan, expect limited English from the staff. The signs pointing to the hotel entrance were mostly Katakana, but once inside English placards abound. Easy metro or rail to most of the top tourist spots around Osaka (Dotonbori, the aquarium, Osaka castle, train to Nara). Rooms are small - it's Japan. "Semi-double" sized room was big enough for two, and the bed was plenty wide. Mattress was pretty firm. Good deal for breakfast with choice of Japanese or Western style eats. Only downside for some might be the pay-TV. But, come on, there's plenty to do outside!

Dining
If you don't visit Doutonbori street, you're missing the point of eating out in Osaka. Get some takoyaki, ramen, okonomiyaki, and hit up an izakaya for all-you-can-drink specials. With a full belly and a good buzz, look for the cat cafe where you can sip some tea and pet some very well bred cats.
