“Good hotel for business”

I have stayed at various hotels in the downtown Oslo area, trying to find the right balance between price and value. On this trip I also stayed at a property in front of the main park. Although that location is superior to this Scandic at the train station, especially for tourism, that hotel was old, rooms were small and noisy and it lacked air-conditioning (typical for Europe and the Nordics central city locations). It was a pleasure to arrive at the Scandic and feel the cool air and enjoy the larger room which was quiet. This is really the only place to stay for business, as it is an easy transfer to any form of public transportation, thus to anywhere in town. And the price thorugh Expedia was fine.

“Fine for expensive Oslo”

This is an small room per US standards. But it is clean and and well kept.

Area recommendations
Most of the downtown Oslo hotels are in close proximity to each other. So talking about the Scandic being in a more seedy neighborhood doesn't really play out since there are many hotels within that area. It is very convenient to the airport express.

“Best Location in Oslo”

To be fair, I did nickname this place the "Hotel Ikea." The room was small and very efficient, neither of which were necessarily bad. The worst part for me was that the beds were uncomfortable. Other than that, you could not pick a better location to stay in Oslo. The hotel is connected to Oslo S train station, and right outside are the main terminals for the trolley, bus and metro lines. Karl Johans Gate, the main tourist shopping center avenue, is parallel to the hotel. The room itself was very green; you need your key card to operate the electricity. There was always plenty of hot water, and free computers with Internet in the lobby. Perhaps the best part of my stay was the free breakfast. Homemade bread at the restaurant was just one of the many treats.

Area recommendations
Central Oslo. Everything is either within walking distance or close to public transportation.
Getting around
Use the public transportation: Metro, trolley or bus (even the ferry). If you get an Oslo Pass, you can ride for free. Generally, no one checks to see if you even have a pass (except the ferry), although there is the occasional spot inspection. The maps provided with the Oslo Pass are easy to read, the system always tells you how long a wait it is until the next vehicle, and within a few hours you'll feel like a native, navigating around Oslo.
Must see
The Viking Ship Museum, The Fram, The National Museum, The Monastery Ruins on Hovedoya Island, The Folk Museum.
Other
Everything is closed in Oslo on Sundays. Restaurants, cafes and the museums are open, but shopping is out. Frankly, it made for a nice change from the USA, where everything is 24/7.

“Clean, convenient and . . .”

reasonably priced and you can help offset Oslo's high prices by making the most of the included breakfast buffet and hitting up the pizza buffet (same adjacent restaurant but not included in room rate) later.

Area recommendations
Do Norway in a Nutshell begining/ending in the connected rail station to see the Fjords in a day.

“Great Hotel & Location”

Hotel was located directly next to the Oslo Centralstation and was easy to get to. Perfect for taking a trip out of town the next morning as we did. Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast is included in the room rate and is amazing, nothing like anythingn offered in the USA. Amost didn't need lunch after filling up on the breakfast. Definately would stay there again. It's also very convenient to the main shopping and restaurant street and the attractions.

“Good location and marvelous breakfast at Egon”

We stayed there for 3 nights. The location is extremely convenient. The room is a bit small but we had everything we need. Our package included breakfast every morning at Egon, a restaurant in the same complex G/F, just across one of the hotel side exits. The breakfast is a marvelous buffet of fresh salad, cold cuts, bread, drinks etc. They even have earl grey tea. The only shortcoming we can think of is the location: beware of wanderers around the central station at night.
