Missed opportunities!Posted Sep 24, 2014
Beautiful inn with great views of the water. However, the experience could have been a lot better. Upon arrival (4pm) had to call for someone to check us in. Once she took us to our room, that was the last we saw or spoke to any staff member. We were disappointed that there was no beakfast served. Mini fridge in room would have been nice if bottled water and maybe cookies or fruit upon arrival. Room was nice, large and comfortable, but missing a few things. The tv was very small and could not be watched from the bed. As a safety issue, there wasn't a phone in the room either. Quality of towels and linens subpar for what we paid for our room. There was no one around to ask about the area and things to do. This could be a really nice inn if they paid more attention to detail and friendliness.

Not what was advertised.Posted Sep 5, 2014
Pros: Nice location.
Cons: Need a better description of the rooms/suites.
Location: Not much to do in Manteo. Nags Head is close by though with lots to do and see.
This was advertised as a suites hotel. When we checked in we were told that ours was a small room and not a suite. We were upgraded to a nice 3 room suite with a view of the water and a balcony. However this was for one night since it was booked for the next night. We were told that we could have that same suite for the next 2 nights of our stay. There were no other rooms available so we were moved back to our reserved room. This was just a room with a small kitchen and and a bathroom. There were no windows and only one chair. The next afternoon we came back to the hotel expecting to be in the large suite. We were not. We were told that the people in the suite wanted to stay another night. We left the hotel and got a room elsewhere. Be careful if you want to stay in this hotel. Make sure that you understand what you are getting.

Good place for R&RPosted Jun 13, 2014
Hotel has a very good view of the water and we enjoyed our stay at the Burrus. However, they advertise a breakfast on this website which is not true. We had to call someone to get into the hotel and never saw anyone after we checked in.

Sehr ruhig. Mehrere gute Restaurants in Laufentfernung. Unbedingt eines der besseren Zimmer nehmen, nicht alle haben den gleichen Ausblick.

Burrus House InnPosted Aug 2, 2013
Great hotel. More like a B&B (except no breakfast) rather than a hotel. Very convenient to the beach. We really enjoyed our stay and are already making plans for next summer. Vickie (owner or manager) was very accommodating and most pleasant.

Beautiful hotel, casual servicePosted Jul 16, 2013
I understand why this place has mixed reviews. The physical hotel itself is beautiful, nice view, exotic hardwood floors, etc. But it is managed very casually. When I checked in, the manager said there had been a cancellation so she upgraded me to a better suite, and said I could stay as long as I wanted, because no one was coming after me. Great! I thought. But about 10 AM on checkout morning she called and asked when I was leaving, because now someone was coming after me and she wanted me to check out so she could clean the room. I pointed out that she had told me I could stay as long as I wanted when I checked in, and I was at that time away from the hotel so it would be about an hour before I could return and remove my things. I came back to the hotel to find the maid in there cleaning around my things, so I could no longer have the leisurely pack up and change out of the bathing suit time that I had planned. She meant well, but she really should not have changed the instruction she gave me midstream. If she were not sure I could stay as long as I wanted (and I only wanted to stay until 11:30 AM, which is not exorbitant), she should not have told me I could. A professionally run hotel would not do that. I still give them a 4, but if you want to stay at a place run like a luxury hotel, this is not for you.

It is a great place. A storm was predicted, the staff had an umbrella in the room for us, and also had flashlight in case of power outage.

Beautiful placePosted May 29, 2013
We liked this place very much the moment we arrived. Our room had a nice view of the Roanoke Sound, with private decks. Our room was very spacious and bright with many windows, and had a separate bedroom, a kitchenette, and a huge bathroom. We liked attention to details, like furniture, decor, linens, etc. The inn is a short distance to Nags Head (where we spent most time), but sufficiently away from the craziness of a beach town. There were good restaurants not far away from this inn. One thing I want to emphasize is that this is not a hotel. It is a small inn, with only 9 or 10 rooms. I saw some reviewers complaining about the lack of basic amenities and services you find in a typical hotel, but I thought this place definitely had a character a typical hotel doesn't have. We enjoyed coming back to this place after spending a day at the beach. Although there aren't services like a concierge or 24-hour front desk, I thought the people at this inn were very friendly. They told us which restaurants are good in the area, and we enjoyed dining at those restaurants. Next time we go back to the outer banks, we may stay at this place again.
