Oxford Treat?

Posted Mar 23, 2015
Pros: On arrival a great 5* welcome from the doormen. Lovely clean sheets on the bed and comfortable mattress.
Cons: Staffing at reception desk. Fundamental look at the room quality, and pricing.
Location: Where do you start with Oxford if you want to enjoy the history of the famous colleges. Come here for Summer VIII's rowing regatta in May; a must.
For a 5* rated hotel charging 5* prices I was left feeling that I must have missed something. It certainly did not hit the value for money mark. The room was very small (I kept tripping up over the furniture so tightly was it all crammed in), temperature of the room and water hard to control, and reception on checkout so under staffed the wait was painfully embarrassing for me and the poor receptionist. At peak checkout time she was left on her own to deal with a tetchy queue building as she struggled to checkout tourists of many different nationalities. Have stayed in Macdonald Hotels before and always been pleased, so hopefully this was just one of those stays, as the AA who gave them 5* this year seemed to like it!

Good location but needs refurbishment

Posted Feb 19, 2015
Pros: The location and friendly staff
Cons: It needs refurbishment. The staff need to be stopped from using the lifts. They block them all the time.
Location: Very good city centre location
I was disappointed at the state of the hotel, it needs a big refurbishment. Also the lifts are very slow and always seemed blocked by staff moving linen and cleaning materials. The location was good and staff were friendly

A real treat

Posted Feb 11, 2015
Pros: The quality of accommodation with attention to detail made our stay relaxing and very special.
Location: Central Oxford with the Ashmolean over the road, Pitt Rivers Museum and the Botanical Gardens an easy walk away and you can't forget all the colleges!
Exceptionally helpful staff ensured our stay was the treat we had hoped for. Luxury without making us feel uncomfortable, an impressive combination.

Great restaurant but uncomfortable bed

Posted Feb 10, 2015
Pros: Good food and service and stunning restaurant space
Cons: Room decoration and bedding
Location: Oxford is great for a weekend break with plenty to do very close to the hotel
The room was a bit shabby for a hotel of this class and we had a double bed where you end up rolling into the middle as the mattress was shot.

Good Position in Centre of Oxford

Posted Feb 4, 2015
Pros: Position and "old world atmosphere"
Cons: Reduce parking charges - £28.50 per night is excessive
Location: Shops & museums close by
Very efficient staff and comfortable hotel, but the parking charges are OTT when added to the the room charges

Good central position for visiting city centre

Posted Jan 19, 2015
Pros: Staff really helpful. Looking after the suitcases.
Cons: Cost of top floor rooms
Location: Excellent location for all city centre needs
I was dissappointed with the room as we were put on the top floor which was once the attic space. The wonderful sweeping staircase finished on the 3rd and then it was a creaky twisted staircase. For my £200 no breakfast I expected a little better. The room was clean and nicely furnished with a large bathroom with both large shower cubicle and bath, but didn't like the creaky floor boards! Plus the bed was okay but too hard for me. The plus side was the nearness to everything. We enjoyed a full afternoon tea at the hotel which we had at 1300 which meant we still had appetite for a lovely pizza in town followed by a fil at the cinema all in easy walking distance. We decided not to partake in the almost £20 breakfast each but found somewhere really good and a quarter of the price. The hotel ws excellent for their staff and we really appreciated them looking after the suitcases. All in all a wonderful mini break.

A good place to explore the centre of Oxford.

Posted Jan 19, 2015
Pros: Location in the centre of Oxford.
Cons: See above - reducing the level of noise in the front facing rooms.
Location: Right in the centre of Oxford, so good for sightseeing and shopping.
This wasn't my first visit to this hotel, I looked forward to the stay. However, this time I was given a room on the first floor facing the front of the hotel and hence a very busy road. Given that we talk about a 5 star hotel should not have a huge effect given the possibilities of double/tripple glazing or by making sure that the windows close tightly. Unfortunately, none of this was available, so I could have literally slept on the road - so noisy was the room. Apart of that, the room was perfectly clean, comfortable and the breakfast delicious.

Comfortable hotel in good location

Posted Jan 13, 2015
Room was fine for a one night stay, but the TV cupboard door would not stay open, which made it difficult to watch the TV. And it's over-priced.

Old, classic, appropriately Oxford

Posted Jan 2, 2015
The hotel had an excellent location and represented the area well. The staff was rigid and serious, the lounge drinks delicious but pricey not to mention the lack of music or entertainment. A bit dull and more appropriate for an older couple. The bathroom was nice with updated fixtures except there was no exhaust fan so the shower steam set the fire alarm off! The room was quiet but the mattress is a bit too firm. A screaming baby ruined the solitude on our last night.
