Safety concerns.

Posted Jan 19, 2015
Pros: Location
Cons: Security
Location: Oxford colleges and museums in walking distance.
Someone burst into my room at 1am - reception staff were not concerned. Apparently their key-card machine was being changed over, so someone else might have a key that allowed them to open my room. Scary.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your stay at the Mercure Oxford Eastgate Townhouse, . I am so sorry and embarrassed that someone managed to burst into your bedroom at 1.00am in the morning. We do have electronic keys on all our door locks throughout the hotel, and there is the occasional hiccup that a key does not work in the door due to a technical error. The keys can become blank when next to a mobile phone or another electrical device. I have spoken with my colleagues who were on duty during your stay, and they have apologised if they had been somewhat casual with their approach to your concern. We were fully booked in the hotel on 2 of the 3 nights that you stayed, and we think one of the guests had asked for a replacement key and in error the receptionist had mistaken the number, and copied your room number. He then gave it to the guest who automatically without thinking went to your room and entered, realised it was not and went back down the stairs to ask for another electronic key for the room he was actually staying in. I have since spoken with the team on the front desk to ensure that they double check the room number and the name of the person staying in the room. I can assure that this is the first time any incident of this kind has happened in the time I have been manager of this hotel. Again my sincere apologies for the lack of attention to detail , please be assured that the appropriate action and re-trained has been taken. Kind regards Peter Watt Manager

Thank you for your feedback and I am very sorry that you r bedroom did not meet your expectations, we are quiet at the beginning of the year. The hotel is due to start a refurbishment programme of the hotel on the second week in January; it should have started last year, however due to the age and structure of the building we have had to re-look at every bedroom individual so as to enhance the space available and ensure a greater product. I am meeting with the area manager for the housekeeping company, and will ask for a full report on the cleanliness of the bathroom, I am very sorry and embarrassed that the standards set are not being adhered to. Great Location

Posted Dec 16, 2014
Pros: Location, Charm and Cleanliness.
Cons: Food. Staff should sell the town a bit more. They did not get excited about things to do in the city.
Location: Terirble for clothes shopping! Bookstore is a dream. Farm to table restaurants lovely, sourced from nearby Cotswolds. Student priced food good value.
Great, Safe location. Walk to everything. Perfect for exploring quaint Oxford town. Restaurant on premises open late but a hit or miss. The Risotto is horrible. Could not eat it. The burger surprisingly good. Not a problem, good food within walking distance. Clean and comfortable, charming European hotel however, for Americans that love to shower a big problem. It is tub facilities only and hand held shower. But charming nevertheless. Staff is helpful and accommodating. The view from our window was beautiful, overlooking Magdalen College. I will stay here again.

Great Location, Disappointing Room Quality

Posted Nov 30, 2014
Pros: Location fantastic
Cons: Condition of rooms - doesn't live up to usual standard of a Mercure hotel
Location: Everything could be reached on foot within about 15 minutes - city centre, bodleian library, museums, university colleges, covered market, etc
Hotel in fabulous central location and I have stayed in Mercure hotels in other worldwide locations so I was very disappointed when I saw the quality of the room. This hotel is actually very expensive, though I was happy to pay the price because of location, obviously I did expect better quality for that price. The paint work was peeling around the frames and also the bath panel was peeling. Not all bathroom doors fitted properly and you could hear residents in other rooms banging them to try and close them. Heating inefficient which as it was winter was very frustrating. Loved the location though, so if you're not as fussy as me about room quality I would recommend it.

Thank you for your feedback and I was pleased that the hotel is located ideally for your visit to Oxford. I am afraid we were due to start a total refurbishment of the hotel bedrooms this autumn, having completed 2 pilot rooms for the project going forward. However due to the age, structure and location of the hotel I am afraid this will now be happening in the new year, and should be completed by the end of May, taking into account all our guest feedback. I hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back in the future after our refurbishment. With kind regards, Peter Watt, Manager

Let down by staff

Posted Nov 5, 2014
Pros: Location
Cons: English-speaking staff. Functioning air-conditioning.
Location: We visited the Sheldonian and climbed to the cupola -- not always available. Also Natural History Museum, always mind-blowing.
The hotel was pretty much what we were expecting: superb location, small but adequate room with nice view, shabby bathroom but plenty of hot water, mean tea/coffee provision (only one packet of biscuits!) and noisy, non-functioning air conditioning. . . What we weren't expecting was a totally incompetent member of staff at Reception, who spoke hardly any English and who was rude and aggressive from start to finish. When told that we had already paid (and the deduction had gone through several weeks previously), she snapped, 'No you haven't. You must pay now. Give me your credit card.' After some difficult negotiations, I was forced to hand over the card ('I just take £40 off it for the extras'), and then she announced, 'Your card has been refused. Give me another card' .. . it went from bad to worse. In the end, by promising not to have breakfast or to incur any extras, we managed to get the room keys from her. A horrible beginning to the holiday. Having said that, there was a lovely girl on the desk when we came to check out. How different the whole stay would have been if we'd had her to start with! But I shall avoid Mercure hotels in future -- it wasn't a bit in the same category as the adverts.

Thank you for your feedback, and I am pleased that you enjoyed your time in Oxford. I am so sorry and embarrassed as to the way in which you were treated by one of the reception team, I am afraid that Oxford is not an easy city to recruit English speaking personnel, and although we do encourage our colleague to learn and be capable of speak English, on occasions it has taken longer than originally expected. The receptionist in question has been spoken to and the appropriate action and re-training has taken place, I am very sorry at the poor way she communicated with yourself on arrival, I can assure you it is not mine or the Mercure standard of welcome. I am in the process of recruit a new English speaking reception manager to take command of the welcome team. Kind regards Peter Watt Manager

Close to centre of Oxford

Posted Nov 4, 2014
Pros: Staff we all very pleasant and professional.
Cons: Bathrooms - apparently they are currently undergoing renovation.
Location: Close to centre of Oxford - well placed for walking around the city.
The entrance to the hotel is nice and the staff we met were all very pleasant. We did not visit the bar or restaurant. We stayed in classic double room on the first floor which was pretty small although it did have a good size wardrobe and desk, trouser press etc. Our room was clean although there were what looked like grease stains on the wall and the bathroom was in need of some attention. The bath panel was water stained and was splitting in some places. The grouting around the bath was badly water stained also. We reported this to the reception staff who advised that the hotel was currently being refurbished. We paid £129 for our stay which did not include breakfast. With hindsight I wished we had paid a little more and stayed in one of the other hotels in the area, we usually stay at Hotel Du Vin when travelling so perhaps my expectation of the Eastgate were a little high. Due to the small room and problem bathroom I would have certainly moved to a different hotel if our stay had been for longer than one night

Thank you for your feedback. I am very sorry that you did not feel comfortable in the rooms you were allocated, I am afraid the hotel is over 100 years old and due to the age and structure of the building, our planned refurbishment has been delayed as we reviewing every bedroom and bathroom individually to meet our guest needs. Please be assured that your concerns and constructive comments have noted and will be feed back to the project leader for the bedroom renovation. In closing thank you again for your feedback. Thank you for your feedback, I am afraid the Magdolen Church is located near the river, and although we are some distance away, when it is quiet the sound of the bells can carry. They usually do switch them off between 12 midnight & 4 am in the morning, I do apologise. Kind Regards, Peter Watt, Manager

Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel

Posted Oct 24, 2014 on Hotels.com
