Could be better

Pros: I liked the charm and the decor and the location.
Cons: The Staff and having a safe in each room.
Location: The Angel pub opposite was nice for lunch on the water and the Chocolate Cafe was great for breakfast.
Being in the hotel business myself, a couple of things let this hotel down. The staff did their job, but the Reception girls looked as though they wished to be elsewhere and there wasn't much of a welcome or any kind of conversation. My room was spacious and although the shower, hairdryer, etc was old, the room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. There was no safe in the room (which, in this day and age, there is no excuse for). Upon check-out, there was no conversation and not even a "how was your stay". The night staff member was bar man/security. He was efficient, but again, no warmth. The Red Lion could be an absolutely fantastic hotel with it being a charming place, but they need better staff.

A very pleasant Hotel overlooking River Thames. We liked the decor and the bar staff were polite and helpful. Only criticism was that the room was very warm so we had to open the window which meant that traffic noise and that of river birds was quite intrusive at night. Also the television had poor reception on Channel 4 But I would highly recommend it.

Perfect location- the staff really lets it down

The hotel is in a wonderful location in Henley with river views. The rooms are fine but the heating was on far too high so it was very uncomfotable in the hotel. The reception staff were terrible, no character, hardly spoke any English, no uniform or name badges and took ages to check us in. Also there was no offer of carry our bags to the room at all! The breakfast room looked really dated and based on this and the staff, we opted to eat out. We returned to have a drink in the bar which was corked. There was no atmosphere and the bar man was sitting down on a stool watching a film on the TV- so we decided to sit in the next room which was silent and filled with a random selection of furniture which all seemed to be breaking and needed replacing. It is a shame because under the right management and with a bit of tlc, this hotel could be great. It has the loaction, the space but the staff really lets it down!

The hotel website bears no resemblance to reality. Initially given a room which was literally a shed in the car park. We then asked to be moved and got a room in the main building which was so 1970's British Hotel Cliche that I wondered if we were on some joke TV show. Wallpaper lifted away from the wall, stained lino in the bathroom, dirty windows, greasy patches on the headboard.

Great room overlooking the river, excellent food and service in the resturant, slightly marred by terrible "elevator music"
