“Free airport shuttle, reasonable place”

We have stayed at the Hotel Costa Inn 3 times while flying into Panama. They offer a free airport shuttle which saves some $$, although last time the shuttle was upstairs and the hotel representative (and us) were downstairs, and apparently there was no communication (despite both the shuttle driver and the hotel representative being on their cell phones almost constantly). Waited over an hour to leave the airport. Hotel is clean, reasonably comfortable. Wireless internet on each floor (free) and free breakfast (although last time there was very little food on the breakfast buffet - guess they did not expect so many guests to eat breakfast). The first 2 times we stayed here we were given a large room on the front of the building. Last time our room was significantly smaller, but still fine. Not too many restaurants in the neighborhood, but we had a pleasant meal just down the street at a local restaurant. Walking distance to a large Novey hardware store and a large Riba Smith grocery store.

Area recommendations
The Cangrejo district has a number of reasonable hotels and good restaurants. Safe to walk around at night.

“surprised”

The day we arrived at the room we saw flukes and during the 4 days we were never put water in the room. No change hotel because we had paid in advance. The pool area was closed, the lights went a whole day. At the hotel you need much maintenance.

Area recommendations
For people who travel shopping is very good because the transfers are included at the airport and 3 shopping centers

“I will stay in Hotel Costa Inn on my next trip to Panama.”

I like the Hotel Costa Inn, bar/restaurant is open 24/7 and they have a pool on the roof. I had a big room at the back with large windows and a great view. There is no carpeting but the room was cleaned every day along with clean sheets and fresh towels. It also had a jacuzzi tub and a bidet, didn't use either one. I stayed 2 weeks and had I been in one of the smaller rooms, I think I would have changed hotels. They only had a small window and no view. There was plenty of hot water but it took 10 minutes to arrive at the shower head. I'd turn on the shower, go shave, check a few Emails and by then there'd be hot water. The hotel staff was very nice, friendly and helpful. There is a gated parking lot if you've got a rental car (I didn't). There is a travel agency in the lobby, convenient for tours of the area or longer trips to different parts of the country. The breakfast buffet (included) was good and the food in the restaurant was good also, this isn't a gourmet restaurant. Other than breakfast, I ate about 8 meals there and have no complaints. You get a free shuttle service to and from the airport which would cost you around $60 R/T. The hotel is in a transitional area, not the barrio but close to it. That said, I always felt safe walking in that neighborhood and I'm 5'4", 64 yrs. old, not some hulk that a mugger would think twice about attacking. All in all, I think it's a good value and I will definitely stay there on my next trip to Panama City.

Area recommendations
Casco Viejo was my favorite part of the city, it's the old town, narrow one way streets but with nice looking hotels and restaurants. I ate lunch over there on 3 different days and the food was very good. It's not supposed to be all that safe over there at night and there are areas that you are told not to go into. the police actually stop people and turn them around if they're heading in a dangerous direction. Since the Panamanian "White House" is there, police and military seemed to be all over the place. I did not however go there at night. I wanted to but always seemed to be busy with other stuff.
Getting around
Only use the yellow taxis which are plentiful and cheap, for about $2 you can go anywhere in the city. Don't expect them to break a twenty, I always carried plenty of ones and fives.
Dining
I had very fresh seafood and Italian food. Upscale italian, Tre Scalini restaurant A little down from that, Cafe Pomodoro Spaghetteria. 3 dining areas, patio out front, 1st room inside is lit up like a christmas tree but behind it is an outdoor dining and where just about everyone ends up. there is also a wine bar off to one side. Both restaurants had many people eating there so you know the food is good.

“It was a nice value based hotel”

We stayed at Costa Inn in May 2011 and were pleased with the hotel. We weren't expecting a Haytt, that being said, it was a great value for the money we paid. Staff was friendly, rooms were clean, breakfast was good and the location wes decent. I would stay here again.

Area recommendations
Costa Inn area was ok, via Espana or financial district would be good too.
Getting around
Taxis are very economical starting around $2.00.
Dining
Go to El Trapiche on via Argentina, good Panamanian food.
