“Remarkable Hotel - Certain to go back”
I am very glad I chose Hotel Fontebella instead when my first plan fell through. It's not a large hotel, but has considerable charm. The roooms have been refurbished to a standard higher than most 4 star hotels. The rates are very reasonable for this standard, and we were upgraded to a lovely room with a view (we went early midweek, rather than a busy weekend). The staff are extremely solicitous and speak good English. The views over the plain are down to Santa Maria degli Angeli are stunning. It doesn't have a terrace bar or restaurant but the restaurant it does have, Il Frantoio, was so good that I do not understand why you don't have to book weeks in advance. But it is possible to eat outside in a pleasant garden, even if there is no great view. Quite simply the best short-pasta I ever had - I had never cared for truffles before but this was perfect and won me over. Also a chicken breast with lemon and orange that is unforgettable. No wonder the chef is a Cavaliere. Apparently it's got 2 forks in the Michelin guide. Quite remarkable - a lovely 3 course meal with good local wine and not expensive at all (I have paid 3 times more in a dreary trattoria in London). 5 minutes walk to S Francesco, 10 to S Chiara, 20 to S Damiano. 15 mins cheap taxi to Perugia airport. All ideal.
