“Don't Stay Here”

We have been travelling around Thailand starting with Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and now Phi Phi Island. Our stay at Amari was the worst place I've ever stayed in all my travels and especially in comparison to stays around Thailand. I'm not sure how this hotel received 4 star rating, but they clearly spent all the money on the restaurants and lobby and not the hotel rooms. The rooms could use some spackle and even paint to make them more presentable. Bathroom was awkward and the air conditioning didn't work properly, walls were very thin and you could hear everthing. Restaurants were a hike down the hill from the room. Tuk Tuk rides down to Patong Beach and shopping were $200 baht each way which isn't a lot but it does add up...I would recommend staying somewhere more convenient for less $ such as Holiday Inn or there was also a very nice looking resort and spa down the hill as well. This resort was set-up like a motel as well. If I were expedia I wouldn't even allow people to book with this hotel. Staff were not nearly as friendly as the rest of Thailand people we've met.

“Large, crowded hotel, mediocre service, and unacceptable business ethics”

We checked into the Amari Coral Phuket for the final leg of our Thailand trip, expecting beachfront romance. Well, first of all, there's no beach. Rocks, but no beach. Second of all the hotel is huge, and overrun by tourists, and feels very impersonal (and is in Patong, which is commercialized and Daytona-esque, not exactly what we were looking for). And not very romantic. You have to pay an exorbitant amount for internet, which is not even available in the rooms - you have to use one of the three computers in their gift shop. And when we decided to go elsewhere, we politely inquired about the cancellation/alteration policy two days before we planned to leave - management assured us that we would not be charged an additional night provided we gave 24 hours notice of our departure. Well, we gave appropriate notice, and they charged us an extra night anyway! At that point, we were too exasperated to fight with hotel management, so we just left. But overall, a VERY disappointing experience.

Area recommendations

Kata beach - more relaxed, less commercialized, and slightly less crowded than Patong. And a very nice beach!

“A quiet retreat minutes from mayhem!”

Staff at the Amari was very helpful, language was not a problem .The rooms were very nice with ocean views. We have stayed with Amari before but not at Patong Beach. The layout was very nice but someone with difficulty with stairs may experience some difficulty. The location is great, about a 10 min walk from the usual Patong bustle. We would definitly stay at the Coral Beach again.

Area recommendations

The side streets and allys off the main beach drive are full of great restaurants worth sampling. The taxi fares seem universal in Patong Beach. 200 baht, no matter where you go. The Fanta- Sea production was a worthwhile experience, just allow extra time to see everything.

“All in all a really good experience”

At first, I was disappointed in the quality of the room; it was rather small with cracks in the walls. It was however very clean and very comfortable. Food was pretty good and the staff were extremely friendly. It was easy to get around from the hotel, either walking or with TUK TUK. The atmosphere was rather quiet; guests were mainly couples and elderly people. In summary, I would definitely recommend this hotel.

“I would go back!”

This hotel was great. The breakfast was splendid. The La Gritta restaurant was terrific. We had a farewell dinner, it was tops! The hotel grounds were quiet and away from all the vendors. The hotel staff was very helpful and courteous. I would go back and recommend it to friends. by the way, we were treated extra special since it was our 13th anniversary.

Traveler's tip

Rent a motorbike! Tuk-tuks over charge to get you around Patong. For the price you spend on 1 or 2 Tuk-tuk rides, you can rent a motorbike for an entire day and go where you like. Once you have a good map and motorbike you may go where you please. I also recommend going during April - August. This is the off season and many businesses offer 2 for 1 specials.

“A Solid hotel”

This hotel was a great start to my visit in Thailand. The staff were very service oriented and attentive, the rooms were quite clean. The people at the hotel were eager to help you in any way they could and you genuinely felt looked after when staying here. My only cons about the Amari were the following, it was located near a very isolated beach with little or no room, the isolated beach might appeal to you if you want no one else around. My only other con is that it is a ways from Patong Beach where all of the nightlife and restaurants are, it is walkable, but after a long night out at the bars and clubs, that walk is a tough one, especially as it is up a steep hill as you approach the main gate of the hotel. All in all, i would def stay here again, however i would say this hotel is geared more towards couples and i was with a friend so we felt like a bit of an oddity. But still, a great hotel, pleasant staff, and great ocean views in every room.
