Cute Inn

Posted Feb 26, 2015
Pros: I liked the old-fashioned feel of it.
Location: It is close to downtown Portland, but on the outskirts, which I did not realize.
The hotel was very nice and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Our stay was wonderful! A quaint European-style hotel right in the middle of Portland!

Great hotel!

Posted Jan 30, 2015
Pros: Definitely the charm and character.
Cons: Bathroom, it's a very small shower.
Location: There were a good number of places to eat within walking distance.
My husband and I booked this hotel at the last minute and what a pleasant surprise when we arrived. This is such a beautiful hotel, the charm and character are quite noticeable as soon as you arrive. The room was very clean and and the bed quite comfortable. There was a very good selection for breakfast. The staff was very friendly and helpful; all and all, a very good stay for us. We will definitely stay here again. Thank you.

Very comfortable place...

Posted Jan 30, 2015
Pros: I felt welcomed and loved
Cons: Need a more comfortable chair for sitting and reading (there was such a chair, but not up to snuff); shower was too confining; a bar would be great
Location: We were there for 2 nights in a blizzard so the deli next door was a gift
This is one great place with a lot of character and welcoming staff.

Comfortable and cute

Posted Jan 26, 2015
Pros: Friendly staff and old-style
Cons: Quality of linen
Location: We visited in January so there wasn't much to do. Good food nearby, though! Not too far from the center of town
The whole place feels old but in a good way. The room was cute (granted up three-ish flights of European style stairs) and had a nice view. Felt very classic and grandmother's house. Was very clean. The sheets were a bit scratchy and too hot for me.. I slept on a towel the second night because the sheets stuck to me in the night. If you're not used to a furnace, it gets a tad loud at night. Breakfast was minimal but acceptable and the staff was very considerate and helpful. Overall, an antique place that's cute and has a good location.

Historic inn

Posted Jan 8, 2015
Pros: The staff, charm, decorations, price
Location: Downtown Portland is a close drive.
The Inn at Saint John was a great and affordable option for our stay in Portland. The inn was very charming and historic and was nicely decorated. The staff was courteous and always helpful in answering any questions we had. Our room was spacious. We had a private bathroom across the hall that used our key to access. There were lots of stairs as we were on the top floor but that wasn't a problem for us. The inn provided cookies and coffee 24/7 which was a nice amenity.

A funky classy old hotel

Posted Jan 1, 2015
Pros: Everything
Cons: The heater/air conditioning unit is noisy. Of course they all are, even in the fancy places.
Location: Everything is nearby. Parking is free and easy. Stay there and walk or bus to everything else.
I love this place. There are many fine hotels and motels in the Portland area, from the sleazy to the sublime. But the Inn at St. John is my favorite and where I take visiting friends and family. It is close to the Old Port, hospitals, trains and buses and planes. It is charming, clean, friendly. The owners are amazing. The stairs are not for the faint of heart and best for people traveling light, but there are totally accessible rooms on the first floor. The rooms are clean and lots of little touches make you feel fussed over.

Unique

Posted Jan 1, 2015
Pros: At least in our room, one could open the window and actually get some fresh air, not the pumped in variety that is now almost ubiquitous.
Location: Maine Medical just up the street. A very good small Thai restaurant next door. Minutes from Greyhound and Amtrak.
As downtown Portland hotels go, the I@SJ is special. A refurbished 100+ year old mansion, it has all the pluses and minuses that one might expect from such a property. On the 2nd floor, many rooms have private bathroom, but not in the room itself, in our case down a small corridor, a relatively minor inconvenience, compensated for by the price. There are many amenities not found elsewhere, e.g. robes. That said, the property has a slight museum-like quality that leads to minor anxiety about possibly breaking something.
