Portsmouth International Port is a gateway to the rest of Europe, as well as the nearby Channel Islands. Considered Britain’s best-connected port, it operates ferries, cruises and cargo ships. Access it easily just north of Portsmouth’s center. Start here for a great opportunity to visit the historical seaside town of Portsmouth.

Traveling to and from mainland Europe is simple using the port’s regular ferry services to France and Spain. Ferries also operate to the Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight and Gosport. Embark on a cruise and travel somewhere new. From here seek Bilbao and the northern shores of Spain or cross the English Channel to Caen and other ports along the French coast.

While waiting for your boat, the terminal provides every comfort. Stop at the coffee shop and bar where you can buy meals and drinks. Exchange currency and browse in a small shop. Relax in a comfortable seat and watch the happenings of the port through the large glass windows. The terminal itself is an impressive environmentally friendly construction heated by thermal sea energy and cooled by the sea breeze, captured by wind catchers.

The port is easily accessible by car via major highways. If you aren’t bringing your car on vacation with you, pay to park in the four-story garage at the terminal. From London, you can also get a bus straight to the port or take a train to the nearby train stations of Portsmouth Harbor or Portsmouth & Southsea. From these spots take a taxi to the port.

Visit the fascinating seaside town of Portsmouth. It has one of Britain’s main naval bases as well as many historical and current attractions showcasing the area’s naval history, including boats, museums and quays. If you have time, walk south 0.7 mile (1.1 kilometers) to the Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum to learn about the life and works of the iconic British author.

If you’re looking for a different way to connect with the rest of Europe, head to Portsmouth International Port to begin your adventure.
