The worse part was the staff. Not a single friendly interaction with anyone, from the chilly young woman at the front desk to the brusque woman who served us coffee at breakfast. While sitting by the hearth in the lobby, the fire went out and the entire lobby filled with thick smoke. I was just trying to help by trying to reignite the flame in the fireplace so the smoke would stop, something I do all the time at home with our own wood stove. A woman with a thin gray ponytail appeared from the kitchen and began yelling at me to get away from the fireplace and I tried to explain that I was only trying to help. She shouted that if I got hurt I would probably try to sue the inn and they would be responsible, and told me to leave. She was horribly agitated and rude beyond description and acted as though I shouldn’t even be in the lobby and really made me feel unwelcome and made a point of humiliating me in front of the other guests and staff. I’m just glad my children were still in the room. Also, the base boards in the tiny bathroom were filthy as if they hadn’t been wiped down in months. When you opened the windows to get air into the room, there was a thick crust on the sill.

A lovely old Inn. We had dinner and breakfast and bothe food snd service were great. Our only complaint is we had no hot water fir our shower. When we mentioned to the front desk the response was no one else had this problem. I am glad for this but was a bit surprised that we did not get some sort of apology. I said I was not expecting anything to be done for ys but wanted to let them know so they could check it our before someone else stayed there.

It is the quintessential Vermont inn. The dining experience was a delight and the full breakfast in the morning was terrific. Built in 1793 it is old and not perfect, but perfection would take away from the charm and history that make it such a great place to stay.
