"Beautiful hotel!"
This hotel made our stay in the Dominican Republic! Beautiful grounds, tasteful decor, immaculate in every way. The pool is amazing and not crowded. The beach is not picture perfect, but the service makes up for that. It was quiet and relaxing.

The Palace at Playa Grande

Playa Grande, Rio San Juan - Map
"Treated like royalty at The Palace!"
The Palace didn't start as a luxury hotel but rather a private residence. But now it is open to the public to get a glimpse of what it must be like to live like royalty! The location is ideal. The Cliff House is literally built into the ocean-side cliff. The main building (The Palace) is set back across wonderful landscaping and terraced walkways with fantastic views. A third building (the guesthouse) has 4 guest rooms as well. This is an ideal location for a relaxing and private vacation. Meals are set out by the staff on the back porch which receives a wonderful breeze all day. Other covered porches and gazebos offer relief from the sun when needed. The pool is comfortable and refreshing. Local wildlife includes resident chickens and peacocks. However, all of these amazing facilities pale in comparison to the tremendous staff whose only mission seems to be to pamper you and make you feel like you are the only guests in the hotel. To be fair, on two nights, we were. But the morning, afternoon, and evening staff were attentive, courteous, helpful, polite and right there whenever they were needed. The service is truly world-class--unmatched at all but the most exclusive luxury international hotels. Details: Location on the ocean, not as some Google Maps put it in Rio San Juan. Look for the kidney-shaped pool. ATM available in town; staff will give you a ride. Get a ride from airport thru the hotel to save hassle; meal plan available at hotel too.

The Beachcomber at Las Canas

30 Calle Las Canas, Las Canas - Map
"Quiet out of the way Resort"
The Beachcomber is a smaller hotel about 20 mins east of Sosua. The rooms were simple and clean. Some of the rooms have been updated and only a couple have A/C. I don't think any room has T.V.(It was nice not to have) but they do have Wifi. We had an updated 2 bedroom 2 bath room with A/C (loved the A/C). The room was large enough for at least 2 couples, or a few kids. It had a sitting area with some love seats, a dinning table and a small refrigerator. They had safes but you do not need them as the area is safe and there is always an armed guard at night. The hotel sits directly on the beach. There are not any other hotels around so the only people you will see on the beach are the people at the Beachcomber and locals. We were there in October and had the place to ourselves. Luis(Lewis) the manager and his staff were great. Lewis speaks English and is a great person, warm and friendly and willing to do anything that we needed. He was able to coordinate taxis and trips to various parts of the island and at great rates. They have surf boards to rent at the hotel and Luis and his girlfriend are great surfers and can set up lessons if desired. Our rate included breakfast, lunch and dinner and was individually prepared. We ate under the large cabana which also has a bar, pool table and ping pong. The Beachcomber was exactly what we wanted small, off the beaten path, low key place with a personal touch. I wish I was there right now

Blue Bay Villas Doradas - Adults Only - All Inclusive

Playa Dorada 538, Puerto Plata 00000 - Map
"Excellent 18+ destination with a great beach!"
The hotel experience was overall very pleasant. This is a RCI/BlueBay location, so if you are first timer here or non-member, prepare for their sales speech to becoming a member. The destination is great with lots of activities provided by the activity-team. This includes beach volleyball, 30-min bike tours in nearby areas, pool volleyball, small games by the pool, curling on non-iced surface and horseshoes (probably not all). Some of the rooms are located very near the pools, which are also the source of activities, so if you can, try to book a room that is not by the pools, if you want to go to sleep early or sleep in late. The buffet is excellent and there are always something open to go have a meal or quick snack in. The main pool has a bar in it and other bars are conveniently located near the pools and at the beach. The 3 restaurants require advanced booking, but provide a lot more romantic atmosphere to have your dinner at. There are some items in the menu that are not included in the all-inclusive price, which was a bit of a bummer. These extra-fees (lobster, prime beef (imported), to give examples) have a decent price tag. Just be prepared. The rooms were in great condition overall. The air-condition was great and the mini-bar was daily refilled (no extra cost). One complaint would be in the shower. The floors seemed to 'suck-in' water, which was a bit odd (and potentially mould-inducing). Shower corners showed a little black spots in every shower we visited.

Carretera Sosua-cabarete, Cabarete - Map
"Great beach with a lot of waves"
The person that check me in was rude. He wouldn't answer any of my questions. The contract was confusing to much small print and each section was in 5 different languages. After I left the lobby, they have a person showing you to your room. The room was nice, ocean view with two queen size beds. I wouldn't trust the safe it looked like someone tried to pry it open. The next place is looking for food and drink. Everything is in a centralized area, I had a cheese burger that tasted almost as good as Wendy's burgers. I don't drink alcohol but they do serve you the cheap stuff. They have three restaurants, I ate at the buffet. I can't rate the meals because I eat M.R.E.'s. I love the meals at the buffet. One thing bring IMODIUM. The resort staff took about 4 days to warm up to me. I was a single male and from what I have seen they do have drunk gropers. The staff was really good with children. The staff was also very good with entertainment, my mom would of loved to see the Cabaret show. I like snorkeling at Sosua it was 50 dollars, make sure you bring a tip the lead person is very good. The only bad thing about the trip is the vendors on the beach. They try to sell you junk. The one would not leave me along. He tried to charge me 80 dollars for a necklace I saw for 10 dollars and 50 dollars for a bottle of Dominican Rum, he was so annoying I never went to the beach to lay down just to watch the surf. This was a real vacation killer.
