Hotel needs an update!

Posted Jun 22, 2015
Pros: Front desk stuff, their manager, restaurant stuff
Cons: Hotel rooms!!!! The activity for kids - older (pre-teens) and little ones!!
Location: The location is awesome. The beach is so beautiful, the palm trees are giving a shade - just lovely.
The location of this hotel is excellent! We absolutely love the Bavaro Beach where we were spending most of the time of our 2 weeks stay with two kids. I was a little bit disappointed of the quality of the hotel rooms. The "regular ones" really need to be renovated. They smell terribly!! Old, dusty furniture, even older mattresses, and stinky drawers are depressing. We were lucky to get an upgrade, which was more comfortable, light with nice bathroom clean mattress and nice closet. But even that room was worn out. The front desk stuff was doing their best to make our stay as comfortable as possible, always professional and extra nice. Food was really good. I can point only one incident when my 2 year daughter pointed on a HUGE cockroach sitting on the door frame from the main restaurant serving breakfast ("Colonial") asking "what is it daddy?". The activities for adults were organized and coordinated very well, opposite to the activities for kids. We were traveling with 8 year old who got excited about reading the schedule for kids activities on the board at the lobby. The board was not accurate, they were sending us from place to place to Chavo who was in charge of the activities for older kids. The problem was that it was not easy to find him and when we finally were able to get a hold of him he was not sure himself if the kids will play basketball or soccer, or if it is going to be at 10:30 AM or 3:30 PM. In overall we had good time.

Club Riu Punta Cana

Posted Apr 16, 2015
Pros: the closeness of the accomodations to the beach, friendly service
Cons: the beds and air conditioning, and no fitness center
The beach and water were absolutely gorgeous. Although the palm tree coverage required moving around the chairs a bit during the day, it was nice to be spread out and not be on top of other people. The majority of the people during my stay were at the pool (where all the chairs are close together and there is hut coverage from the sun). The swim bar was very fun (good for people watching). The buffet was ok - the restaurants were better. The drinks are pretty sugary and not particularly strong - people brought insulated mugs which is probably a good idea for volume and convenience. The only negative would be the pretty hard bed, and air conditioning that could not really lower.

Terrible disgusting room!

Posted Apr 5, 2015
Pros: The staff is great! Our room attendant, Jeanine, was very kind and tried to make a bad situation comfortable. Beach is great
Cons: The beds, linens, bathrooms ALL need complete overhauls. One outlet in the room worked. So trying to charge phones, etc was a disaster
Location: Location is good, and the beach was beautiful. Pools are nice and clean. Beach was very walkable and clean
Really gross, tiny gnats all over room and mainly bathroom. Shower had mold in all edges and ceiling. Really old scratchy thin bedspreads. Poor pillows and rock hard beds. Felt terrible every morning. Had to sleep at beach during the day to rest well. Beds are always an issue in these resorts, as we have stayed with Palace, Excellence etc in Cancun, Cabo, and Jamaica. However a lot can be done by just investing in nice bed linens, and upgrading the tubs, showers, lighting and the big clunker TV. The resort itself is dated, but nice. The food is great and the staff, especially the Colonial servers, were very accommodating. The Riu Fun team is awesome. They were always smiling and kept all guests entertained with dancing and activities! The drinks were hit or miss depending on which bar you frequented but usually ok.
