    “A top five destination”

Everything about this property is just what we're looking for on a vacation: Great service, delicious food, and beautifully maintained landscaping. The Beach is lovely and seaweed is cleaned up every day. The crystal clear free form pools and the lovely natural setting of the property just begs relaxation. We will definitely be back - for a 3rd visit!

    Area recommendations
Take the tour to Saona Island or the Jeep Trip to the countryside. Your travel rep will set everything up for you the 1st day or you can book them ahead.
    When to go
November - cheaper than high season and not so busy
    Getting there
From the Midwest - try to go through Atlanta. Much smoother and more efficient than Chicago or Miami
    Getting around
Take the tours - they're worth it. Don't forget to bring small bills for tipping and some cash for buying souvenirs. Driving can be a bit hair-raising so leave it to the locals to get you around.
    What to pack
Pack light: casual shorts and shirts or a swimsuit cover are fine for the beach restaurants and the Marketplace buffet but the dining rooms do require long pants or dress shorts, sleeved shirts and covered shoes ( no flip flops). No one cares what you're wearing to dinner (there's 8 different restaurant choices for dining) so you can wear the same thing a couple of times...
    Shopping
Buy your souvenirs, chocolate, coffee, cigars and rum away from the beach vendors. You can find a few good deals on the beach but the cigars may be wrapped in banana leaf, not tobacco...so buyer beware! The cigar museum and the Barcelo Rum distillery are the best places for the respective products.
    Events and shows
This was the only poor grade I could give at the resort. The shows were anywhere from lame to so-so. It gave you something to do for a bit until the disco opened.
    Outdoors or beach
The beach at Melia Caribe Tropical is great for everything: long walks in both directions and lots of water-sports from free kayaks and Hobie Cats to Parasailing and a motorized hangliding-raft (both at extra cost). The Bavaro Beach is especially picturesque with forests of swaying coconut palms, cream-colored sugary soft sand and turquoise water. Aaaah Paradise!

    “Not impressed”

Hotel room condition was unsatisfactory. Staff communication was poor. Traveled with 2 other couples and we were supposed to be together in the hotel and we weren't. When we made our reservation it was with Melia Tropical and when we arrived they put us in the Caribe side. Beach and water was littered with seaweed. Extremely difficult to get reservations to restaurants. Food was good,

    “Honeymoon Hot Spot”

It was a good time. The food was good and so we ate alot of it. Nice variety of restaurants to choose from. One drawback is that the steak and seafood and the Japanese restaurants had a hefty surcharge, so we just didn't eat at those. All in all, we would go back there again.

    “Most Relaxing Vacation Ever”

Our Honeymoon stay at Melia Tropical-All Inclusive was the most relaxing vacation I had ever had. The lush green grounds, delicious food, and beautiful beach were amazing. The staff is extremely polite, helpful, and most are multi-lingual. The resort is astoundingly huge and there is no need to leave at all. I was a bit hesitant about the quality of food before we went since this is an all-inclusive resort but they have a variety of restaurants and food to choose from and it is all delicious. There were some downsides to our stay. Seeing as how we were first time guests the very friendly staff quickly extended an "invitation" for a "resort tour". Don't be fooled! This is a pitch for a vacation club membership and they are quite pushy about it. We wasted a whole morning doing this. Maybe people will just say that they already did it and they don't continue bugging you. Also, be aware that the housekeeping has til 5pm to clean your room. This can be an inconvenience if you have to get ready and your room hasn't been cleaned. Our room was amazing with the exception of the bed. It was quite uncomfortable, one side of the bed was sunken in. Lastly, Come prepared with plenty of insect repellent. The beautiful, tropical weather makes this a favorite destination for bugs as well, some are in the rooms also so come prepared.

    Getting around
The little train offered as transportation is great. Just keep in many there are sure to be a few stops before you arrive to your destination.
    What to pack
    Insect Repellent
    Dining
The French restaurant, Ma Maison is a must.

    “Loved the food!”

Beds are a bit small morelike twins. Opt for king bed with sofa & get roll away. Reserve at restaurants! Capri & Thai were great. Breakfast was great at all buffets. Bring radios if you have several families traveling together. Don't need to tip but we did if we stayed by the same bar for a while.

    “beautiful place!”

We went to the Melia for our honeymoon and loved it! The resort was beautiful and the weather was gorgeous! We also really enjoyed the food... there are 8-10 restaurants to choose from each night for dinner in addition to the buffets that were huge as well. We had the best time and would reccommend it to anyone!

“Good hotel, beds are not that confortable, need some improvement in the room maintenance.”

See previous review. Other than that, hotel is very good, service is great and evening activities are "ok" (should put microphones in the actors while performing). Pool service is awesome, bartenders are great and restaurant services were beyond my expectations. Should give more maintenance to the room interiors and beds need to be improved.

    Getting around
Should include a golf cart rental available to move around the hotel. The area is so big that waiting for the train sometimes is like wait forever.

    “It was ok”

This resort was nice but extremely big. They do have 2 trains that run on the Caribe & Tropical side but only golf carts on the Royal Service side. The only time we had a problem catching a ride was when we left. We had it set up for someone to come pick us up with our luggage and they never showed. Thank goodness we were not far from check out. If you don't care about having wifi in your room I do not suggest paying the extra for Royal Service. Not enough people pay for it so the food does not have enough turn over. The food that was served where everyone could go was better. They do have 7 or so different restaurants that you can make reservations at and we never had a bad meal there. Very worth it. Most of the staff was very friendly. You always have your few that do not seem to enjoy their job as well as others. All in all it was a very relaxing vacation and I'm glad we went but its not somewhere that I have to visit again.

“A better than average resort with the right price.”

The hotel got beautiful garden and a good variety of restaurants, but the tennis courts and equipment and aquatic sport equipment are some what lacking. my biggest complain were: All tennis courts needed resurfacing, no attendant was on site to manage the tennis activities, and none of our calls to the tennis court (with the phone extension listed on hotel directory, the same extension given by hotel receptionists) were answered.

    When to go
November is so far the best month to go for me. Got a little bid of rain here and there, but it only enhance the scenery and served as nature's air conditioning.
