Charming Older Hotel with room mainenance issues.
Posted Jan 22, 2013
Pros: It had allot of character and was smaller and close to the beach.
Cons: It was older and there were some maintenance issues with the rooms.
Location: It was close to the beach!
Occidental Grand Punta Cana - All Inclusive We choose this hotel because it is a smaller hotel, and the rooms were some of the largest ones. It is a very well maintaned hotel for it's age, however, the air conditioning in the room just could not keep up, dresser drawers were broken and the toilet seat was broken. The food was not bad, we have come to expect it all to taste different than it does in the US. We asked for the things to either be fixed in our room or for them to give us a different room, it turns out they overbooked by 100 rooms and had no extra rooms available so we were upgraded to a 5 star hotel with a free week to come back next year. It is a very charming hotel and if we can get a killer deal on airfare we will use the free week and go back next year. I would say, if you are looking for a newer hotel with everything in your room in tip top shape, this is not the hotel for you....pay the extra and upgrade to a bigger, newer hotel. We spent 2 days here and then the last 5 at the Bahia Principe - and there was a HUGE difference in the quality of the food, the rooms and the staff. BUT the Principe was also HUGE and some of the rooms were about a mile from the beach, so it all depends on what you are looking for!

Avoid Occidental Grand - Punta Cana
Posted Jan 6, 2013
Pros: The beach was lovely and clean. Lots of palm trees and other vegetation. The beach is a few miles long and wide. Fine white sand. Clean.
Cons: The rooms were outdated and not clean. Broken mirrors, beat up furniture, stained beddings, leaking walls. The dining area windows were very dirty.
Location: The resort location was nice. Very close to the beach (lovely beach and ocean). But, you cannot leave resort on foot.Only with guided tours.Dangerous.
A few days before leaving for our vacation, we contacted the resort personnel and requested a room located in a quiet building. We were assured by the resort staff (unfriendly) that our request would be honored. Upon arrival, we reminded the staff of our request, and were instead assigned a room in the building right in front of the main "stage/performance center." The quality of this room was slightly below average. But the issue was that every night loud people and music would blast until 1:00am. We could not sleep. That same night (first night) we asked to have our room changed, but were told all the rooms were currently occupied, and to try in the morning. We did not sleep and tried again in the morning. We were told that all of the rooms were taken. I wanted to leave and demanded a cancellation. Suddenly a room became available. The room was in an older building (# 12). Bedding and mattress were old and stained. The bathroom mirror cracked in two places. The bath tub old, stained, cracked and moldy. It rained for two days. Rain ran down one wall (I have pictures) all the way to our bed! The room smelled moldy. The furniture was damaged and old. Water leaks were all over the hall way to our room as well. We did not request another room change out of concern of being located in the noisy buildings again. In a nutshell the option we had was: a sub-standard room in a noisy building or a lousy, old/run down room in a quiet building. Absolutely NOT WORTH THE MONEY!

Left early and moved to different hotel

Pros: Restaurant staff were nice
Cons: Food and noise
Location: Great beach and beautiful sea
The hotel was average at best with a lot of broken shelves and handles etc in the room but manageable. Cleanliness was bareable although we had ants running round our sink and toothbrushes. There was a lot of older kids between 10-15 running round the corridors of the hotel banging loudly until we'll after midnight meaning you couldn't sleep. We have kids so are not fussy about noisy kids but when they are still banging doors and screaming at each other well after midnight you do start to wonder what the parents are doing! The worst part was the food which was pretty sub standard although edible. My wife hated the food and noise that much that we called Expedia on day 2 and arranged to move to a different hotel. We went to the Sanctuary Cap Cana which was much better. I think the beach was better at the Occidental as there was less rocks and the pool was nice although the grassy areas were full f fag dimps getting stuck between your kids toes. Entertainment was pretty average and not aimed at kids (salsa/jazz band followed by perfect couple competition which was more adult humor). This is the first time I've ever left a hotel early. They were very prompt with the refund though which i appreciated and it was not hard to check out early.

Extremely Disappointed! A 3 star at it's best!

Pros: The Beach.
Cons: The Room.
Location: Punta Cana
We stayed at the Occidental from March 2nd to March 8th. I upgraded to the Royal Club before we left. Upon arrival we were placed in a bottom floor room. It was awful. It was smelly, damp, rusty fixtures in bathroom and extremely outdated. I asked for a room change and was granted my request the second day. We were given a 2nd level floor which was still outdated but much cleaner and no smell. The Royal Club had it's own private eating area and small pool. The people were friendly. It was next to the beach which is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. We ate at the Italian and Steak house a la cartes which were very good. The buffet was good and had a variety. I did not like the snack bar food. The pizza was awesome. We did not partake in any excursions. My husband and daughter went para sailing and did the banana boat ride which they enjoyed. In the end I did not believe upgrading was necessary but after viewing my sister's room which was in the Air Transat area I was happy I did. The had cockroaches the size of mice. At least we didn't have critters in our room. The grounds are beautiful but overall this resort needs a major renovation. We are not picky people but I have stayed in many resorts which I paid less for and did upgrades which held up to my expectations. I will not stay here again.

Pros: Nothing at all.
Cons: everything besides the beach and weather
Location: nice beach but thats it!
STAY AWAY. DO NOT ENTER. This was by far the worst trip i've ever taken. This was not a vacation at all! My trip started off with my husband and I sleeping in our travel clothes because our sheets were too dirty and our pillows were too gross. This place is Dreadful. if it werent for the beach and weather, I woudlnt stay here even if it was free. Food sucks, rooms disgusting, service non existent & lazy..Do yourself a favor and stay any where but here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME!!
