This little fishing village on a gorgeous stretch of Uruguay's coast is becoming a major tourist destination but, unlike glitzy Punta del Este, still retains its bijou charm. The beaches are pristine, the countryside is unspoilt and there is plenty to do, from hiking in the Santa Teresa National Park to surfing the waves. After dark, locals and backpackers congregate around campfires on the beach.
