“nice budge hotel”

The staff was very friendly and there are vending machines in the lobby which are convenient. The street it's on is a little seedy looking but not too bad. There are are 2 bars, a restaurant, and a liquor store within walking distance. You can technically walk to the beach but it's about 2 miles so a little far to walk in flip flops. The room was clean, although there was an overpowering smell of cheap air freshener. Linens and towels, bathroom, etc were clean. Overall if you are looking for a budget hotel it's good. It is like a motor lodge where the rooms all have doors opening to outside, but it has 3 floors. My girlfriend and I were happy with it as we did not spend much time in the room anyway.

“It Is What It Is”

Next to a marina and two major area bars with thriving summer nightlife, just off Hwy 35. Busy lobby, very lowbrow. Old building but many renovations are apparent and ongoing. Pool is beautiful. Rooms are very clean but wildly outdated furniture and fixtures, TV almost burnt out, dismal showerhead, tub doesn't completely stop up, no fitted sheet on the king bed circa 1975. This said, HBO, free internet and VERY nice staff (except some wierd old guy Ed in maintenance? maybe he's just...grumpy?! The rest of the staff were GREAT!!) Very convenient to excellent beaches. Family friendly, lots of local flavor, a lttle noisy but ok. AC in the room worked well. No elevator though. Can't beat the price, even on a holiday weekend! So if you're high maintenance and don't mind paying 4-5 times as much in a place with frills, this is not your cup of tea. For those who are unafraid of the rougher side of Joisey, this place is a blast and the price is right!

Area recommendations
Belmar is very close by, 5 minute drive, with a kid friendly beach and boardwalk for food and toys. Asbury Boardwalk is 3 miles away, which has events with fireworks throughout the summer and businesses open year round. For night life, look no further than next door at the Headliner, the Sunset Grill around the corner by foot, and Kelly's Pub just up the road a bit. Why drive when you can party and crash, and go to the beach in the late morning? Also, Ocean Grove is nearby for the tamer folks, as well as Avon-by the Sea and Spring Lake. This is a great central location to get alot of adventure in a short distance. Front desk often has discount tickets for local attractions such as Great Adventure, which is about 30 minutes away with theme park rides and adjoining Hurricane Harbor waterpark and a drive thru Safari. In fact, many of the staff can be found staying at this hotel!
When to go
Summer's a great time because so many beaches are right near this hotel. However, the off-season would also be good for a quick getaway, and its likely you can work out a good deal for an extended stay.
Getting there
From the west take 33 to 35 South, and it's on the right. From Asbury, West Sylvania will take you to 35, its right before the Headliner. From Belmar, take 35 N over the Shark River, look for headliner on left, pull into hotel.
Getting around
Rely on 35 to get you up and down the Shore area, avoiding rush hour traffic. Don't be afraid to ask around especially if you have a specific destination, there are often travel or traffic issues that the locals are aware of, and tips for more efficient routes.
What to pack
A hairdryer, they don't have them at the hotel. Bigger towels. A book in case the TV is burnt out. A fitted sheet and extra pillows!
Must see
Asbury Park Boardwalk. Belmar, Spring Lake, Ocean Grove.
Shopping
Take 35N to 33W to get to Jersey Shore Outlets in Tinton Falls. Don't bother with Monmouth Mall on 35/36 as the traffic is a nightmare and it's a nasty rundown place infested with insolent local teenagers and unsavory types. Fun shopping in downtown Asbury and along the Boardwalk. Some shopping on Main St. in Belmar as well.
Dining
Great dining on Main St. in Belmar. Surf Taco is very low key and delicious, it's a must-go-to. A vegan restaurant, an italian restaurant, and a gourmet bistro called Brandl are also right there on Main St in Belmar. Cookman Ave in Asbury has some trendy avante garde restaurants, pricey though. Insanely good Italian restaurant at end of Asbury Boardwalk near Casino building, and other restaurants on boardwalk are also okay. BEware of the sketchy fast food on 33/35 in Neptune! And the terrifying IHOP on 35N after the Asbury Circle! Unless of course you're into particularly sketchy local color!
Family-friendly activities
Boardwalks at Belmar and Asbury Park.
Nightlife
Headliner is your classic Joisey pickup joint. Sunset Grill has a rowdy but older crowd. Kelly's Pub is your typical Irish Pub with a bit of singles action but more like a sports bar feel. All these are in easy walking distance of the hotel, you won't even have to move your car!
Outdoors or beach
Belmar, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Spring Lake, are all very nearby. Your best bet is to look them up individually on line to decide how to plan your adventures, they each have a very distinct personality. Or, you could just take a drive and be spontaneous!

“Good for the price”

The Hotel wasnt bad..no bells and whistles.. Would have been better if it wasnt under extreme renovations when we got there.. Pool wasnt ready ..wasnt happy about that at all and waking up early every morning to saw, drills etc while installing new carpet.. It just would have been nice to know this was going on..guess in a few days it will be real nice for in coming customers.. i would go back again though.. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful!!

Area recommendations

“In need of a make over”

For the price I probably shouldn't complain but this place is pretty funky, not because it isn't clean but because it's ancient!! Clean only can go so far when everything is older than God! People were nice enough, breakfast left a lot to be desired, but the bed was comfortable and no bugs, believe me I checked. Budget places like this are needed but next time I'll look for something a little more modern.

“A nice place to stay”

I had a nice stay here after going to the beach during the day. The staff was friendly, the room was clean, there was a pool, and a continental breakfast. I recommend this hotel for anyone going to the beach looking for simply an economically friendly hotel near the beaches.

“Can't wait to go back”

Very pleasant stay...clean room...great staff. This place is located close to the beaches and I highly recommend the Bayside Grill located across the street. We will stay here again.

Area recommendations
I highly recommend the Bayside Grill that is located right across the street. Awesome food at inexpensive prices.

“Shelter by the sea”

The location was ideal for our visit. The king-size bed & the room were very comfortable. Restaurants in the area were quite good (one even had bayside dining). The staff was very attentive & capable. My only complaint was that the lighting was extremely inadequate for reading & working. It's too bad you can't turn the motel around so that it looks out over the bay instead of the parking lot.
