Great stay at Lux*

Pros: Facilities.
Cons: For the price, the food was not as good as I would have expected.
Location: Easy 15-20 min walk into the main part of the town. There are also bus stops fairly close.
Really enjoyed my stay at Lux*. Multiple eating options, beautiful grounds and great service. The only issue I had was reserving a room for dinner on Saturday night. It wasn't clear if I they were truly booked or simply denying me a reservation because I was a party of one. Nevertheless, I had to order in room service that night, but the did not charge me the 9Euro tray charge. Also, you will save money arranging your airport transfer through the hotel and not using standard taxis. I paid 100 Euros for the taxi. It was only 80 through the hotel. And I was told that some people were charged as much as 300 euros for taxi service.

Lux on the Lagoon

Comfortable hotel, very friendly and helpful staff. Good base to explore the island. Food not up to the 5 star rating. Room service food not as the menu description, beach restaurant food tough uninspired fish. Buffet good, but standard hotel fare. I expect better cuisine from a 5 star French hotel.

Okay, did not exceed expectations for price

La Réunion itself is very much French, so don't be surprised by smoking everywhere- including the restaurants. The architecture if Lux Réunion is beautiful and the welcoming drink is refreshing. The personal list of questions was a bit invasive, but I suppose if you don't want to give your Anniversary date or email address, you can get away with it. A natural reef protects the beach making for a nice ocean swim. Lovely big tiled pool surrounded by "rock" formations. Service from the pool bar and beach bar was great - there if you wanted them, otherwise invisible. There is a special "hut" that hands out towels and rec equipment, though my husband found the snorkel and fins a bit inadequate (we are divers, so poor fitting equipment is as bad as no equipment). They had a lovely welcoming reception with samosas , champagne, sorbet cones and punch ( w or w/out rum ) - very nice touch. We met the lovely Marie-Lucie (phenomenal employee ). If you like a hard bed , this hotel is for you - "sleep right " bamboo structured beds, but I turned over a lot in the night and did not sleep well. Overall, it was an okay, expensive hotel (up about 12 stairs to half the rooms) but bathrooms need refurbishing (showers spill out to the floor, toilet roll on same side as where door turns in, NO bathroom fan) and (actually very nice, upscale essential oil) toiletries are NOT replaced daily, however ground coffee and comp. bottle of water are. Nice spontaneous, whimsical touches of a hidden message in a bottle (we didn't find), yoga (teacher was GREAT), gym (good ), "phone home" for free concept was great- if only the phone lines worked when we tried (broken ). Generally though, it was relaxing and fine EXCEPT the unbelievable housekeeping attendants who literally and ROUTINELY knocked very quickly, then barged in (four separate times) DESPITE the sign on the outside door handle indicating "Do Not Disturb!" That completely blew us away for a so called five star, charging ~ $400 a night and frankly, it blew their tip. This is a former Club Med that has been greatly spruced up. Their marketing brochures and videos are great. We would have used LUX again in Mauritius, but I am used to a Tempurpedic, not a bamboo mattress, so we chose an alternate (Baystone ).

Grand Hotel du Lagon, Reunion-lovely but isolated

The Grand Hotel du Lagon is lovely but not actually in St. Giles. Rather it is a couple of kilometers south and a bit isolated if you want to try other restaurants and haven't hired a car. The service is variable being excellent at front reception but sometimes a bit poor elsewhere. Abit more staff training needed. Nevertheless, quite a lovely hotel.
